It finally came in this week. An EZG-50 in red with matching 1x12 cab with a Heritage 65 speaker. Sounds amazing!
I immediately used it at a show that night, without having much of a chance to fuss with it before hand. The venue was smallish, holding maybe 100-150 people. I went ahead and had the FOH guy mic it and pump it through my stage monitor, just so I wouldn't have to crank it. It was excellent- the clean tones were solid and smooth (definitely in the Fender camp) and with pedals it had lots of mids and cut through well.
My initial thoughts about the EZG-50 are that the clean sounds, especially at low to medium volumes, are extremely good. Not as percussive as a Marshall (with the guitar volume down for a clean sound) and not as chimey as some el-84 amps I have used, but the EZG-50's cleans are smooth, balanced and somehow "familiar." This is an easy set up to carry I should also add, much easier than my Orange 4x12 or Dr. Z Z-Best 2x12 that I usually bring to gigs.
That said, I think my eventual goal is to have the EZG-50 paired with another amp. I love the fender cleans that this thing gets and the impeccable reverb, but without the percussive kerrang of my Marshall I am never going to be fully happy! So I am working on a 2-amp setup
1- Dr. Z EZG-50 and 1x12 cab (clean)
2- Germino Classic 45 and 2x12 cab (crunch)
(however I am also considering a Reeves Custom 30, a Marshall JTM 45 or 1987x, a Reinhardt 18 or some other Marshall-clone)
I have a fairly elaborate pedalboard and switching system, so I plan to route certain fx to one amp and alternate between them, use them both at certain times (solos), etc.
I think this will be the most rocking and controllable setup I have ever used.
Thoughts?
