I just purchased a Mini Z head 2008 anniversary edition. I play mostly blues/ rock can anyone point me in the right direction for speaker(s) and cabinet choice? 1 x 12 or 2 x 12 ?

I haven't tried every speaker, but my Blue sounds great, better than the V30, but it's a 16ohm, Blue is 8ohm. Although, the Ghia sounds great with the V30, even from the 8ohm tap.

Thanks, I just discovered Avatar speakers is only a couple of miles from my house they make the Hellatone speakers which is a V30 broken in and carry the blues and golds as well. I will be paying them a visit and doing some experimenting. Im a new "Z" fan who also just purchased a used Route 66 head and will try to match some speakers to it as well.

A high efficiency low wattage speaker like the Blue is great.

Would the blue sound good in a closed back cabinet?

Mine is in an open back. Most seem to agree that the Blue is better in an open back, but it might be worth a try. To my ears, an open back seems to have sound coming from all around it, where a closed back projects out the front only, like a beam. I guess some speakers work either way, but maybe better in one or another. Like V30's seem better in a closed back.

The overdrive seems muddy thru my V30 ...Did you experience the same? How big a difference is there using a blue?

Well, my V30 is a 16ohm. I would think that a 8ohm V30 would be clearer, mine comes out dark. The Blue is much more clear and accurate, ie. my Collings 290 sounds muddy through my V30, not the Blue. Yet, the same V30 through my Ghia is even brighter than the Blue. I think that a lower powered speaker is best for the Mini, 5 watts can't push a V30's 60 watt handling as well as the Blues 15 watts. The V30 works, but it's not the best match for the Mini. OD pedals work great through the Mini+Blue. Even delay and reverb dissappear thru the V30, but that could be the closed back. Open backs really allow the verb and delay to have more depth. With my V30, those effects are a bit lost.

After Z-Fest I would say a 10" Greenback or a V10, or a 2-10 I have gas for a 2X10 for my Maz and a single 10" cab for my Mini.

I just purchased an Avatar 1x12 with celestion gold. It sounds great very full sounding the notes are very clear and articulate well. It sounds great through my 2x12 loaded with a G1230H and G12M however, the gold sounds better with the mini IMO. The gold sounds great with my route 66 as well.
