Ok... I play rock music and use a Maz 18 NR and a Mazerati. Guitar is usually a tele of some kind. I have a 50's tele ri with an AreaT pickup in it. Usually my main guitar. I use a Tim and a Rat for overdrive.
I usually have to run the tone knob at or past 3 in order to mellow out enough high end to satisfy my ears. And sometimes my tone still feels bright brittle and thin.
I even installed beam blockers on my cabs (greenbacks) to try to cut back the treble.
Does anybody else feel this way? Or are my ears just really sensitive to high frequencies? Do i need to stop playing tele's? I always love the sound of tele's when other people play them. I've always thought my speakers were broken in well... but maybe i have a problem there.
Please share some advice.

Lately I've come to realize that PU adjustment is a real personal thing. I'd set up my guitar, and adjust the PU's to one amp, plug into another and feel like it could tweek it some more. Then back to the other amp. My Mazerati has some extra highs, compared to ghia, SRZ-65, and my Blackheart Little Giant. I try to roll down the tone knob on the Rati, but the highs are still there. My guitar guys were saying just yesterday, that with some guitars, like Tele's, one will sometimes have to lower the PU's on the treble side of the guitar. So, if you haven't tried it, maybe it's worth doing. I hate to adjust them all the time as well, but maybe there's a balanced point that the Tele can sound good through both amps. My Collings 290 sounds perfect through the Ghia, but too harsh in the Rati, especially with some OD on. My Rati has a Tonker in it now, so I plugged into the V30 closed back cab, and it is much more balanced. I don't know that my Tonker isn't even broken in yet, I don't play at high volumes, and it's a tough speaker, 150 watt handling. Bluesteel plays a Rati w/Tonker, and I think he uses Tele's. You might PM him to see if he as some advice. He plays on big stages, so I know his volume is much higher than mine. Good luck with it.

I've been playing a mazerati for the last year or so and my tone know is always between 11 and 12 oclock. Thats a 2/12 combo (Cel Gold/Weber Ceramic Blue) and Teles. I could see if you were running the volume down low that youd want to darken the tone a bit but mine is always cranked up around 1 oclock on the vol so the natural breakup smooths it out a bit.

I had the same issue with my Strat. The solution: Tone Tubby speaker.

What tone tubby did you go with? Alnico or ceramic?

I do indeed! Glad you like the music. We're actually working on demos right now and hopefully we'll have our new record done this winter. Maybe it'll be out next summer sometime. Thanks for the help with the speaker. I'll see if I can get a hold of one.

Don't forget that there's a Tone knob on the guitar too! Different guitars, guitar wood, pickups and all will sound different - so don't be afraid to use the tone knob on the guitar as well. And is it too bright "just by yourself", or in the band situation?

Well... I do have to run the tone knob down on my tele's. I just don't like doing it. It just doesn't feel as good when its not all the way up. From my perspective on stage it feels too bright when its just me and when the whole band is playing. Our FOH guy never seems to complain... But i don't know if he's just cutting out all the highs on the board.

Seth, I play telecasters too, I play a rati through a 2x12 with g12h30 and a v30, I run my tone knob at 1 o'clock. My 82 tele has SD quarter pounders in it. I just installed them and I have fell in love with that guitar again. I used to have the area t and it was very bright with the rati. The qp's are dark and fatter. Amazing tone. My FOH man said it was probably one of the best tones he has heard. I also have a '72 RI thinline. So it is darker anyway. Also I spent about 30 min. adjusting my pickup height to get what I wanted out of the QP's. they sit at a decent level kinda in the middle, if that makes since. anyway, I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help you guys. I did adjust my pickup a little and it helped a lot.
I am really digging the sound of the Remedy though. And also the Reinhardt MI-6. I may be getting rid of the Mazerati to get one of those. I just love my Maz JR too much.

btw, seth...i just bought Rich's rati with the tone tubby. i actually didn't listen to that combo, because I immediately swapped out the chassis with my maz sr. so now i have the maz sr in the 1x12 combo with the tone tubby and the rati in my old 2x12 combo with the blues. however, i can say that the maz sr/tone tubby combo is SICK! i was planning on selling the maz sr 1x12, but now i don't know if i can let it go!

Hey Buddy. The more i played around with the mazerati the more i realized its just not the amp for me. I couldn't ever turn it up enough at our shows to get it sounding good. Its just too country sounding for me. I think i'm weird but i like a pretty dark tone. I just couldn't get there with this amp. Sooo... i ordered a remedy and i'm selling the mazerati head. If you know anyone who wants one let me know.
