I really like the master volume wide open when dialing in clean tones. It gets pretty loud quick but it seams to be clearer at lower volumes and alot punchier when you start approaching the breakup than using the Volume and Master together. Not that doing it that way sounds bad but I'm really finding the other way has it's rewards.

Its not much of a difference (to my ears at least) between the MV wide open and turned down some, but I can agree that its more apparent in clean tones. Its been a few months now, but I'm still trying to find my ideal sweet spot balancing the Volume and Master.

Agreed. When you crank the master volume your gonna be a more full bodied sound because when you crank the MV your getting into the power section of the tubes. But thats the beauty of having a master volume...being able to crank it if you want to or to have it low and still get some overdriven tones.

Man, what a bunch of wusses we have become....or could it be we're a little (gulp!) smarter? I remember (before my ears started ringing 24/7) givin' all the knobs on the ol' Marshall a 'hard right' an' goin' fer broke! (an' I still am)

There's no playing situation I can turn the MV all the way up. In rehearsal I would get the look and even at home. Plus, I have that ringing thing going on in my ears.

I can't crank the MV either but I got an Air Brake so I can open up a bit.

Is there something wrong with my amp? With MV wide open and volume around 9 or 10 it's not insainely loud by any means. High noon or 1 your starting to really open up and get some volume going on.

In recent months I've found myself setting the front (pre-) volume lower and lower (I'm at 2 now) while the MV gets nudged higher and higher. And I am REALLY liking how it sounds!
Some time ago I experimented with diming all the front controls while playing my LP or SG, and that is a glorious sound, too. But that works mostly when playing a very straightforward Cream-like gig. But it doesn't work as well when you need to cover a lot of sonic and stylistic ground.
So, lower front volume and higher MV paired with the Zendrive or King of Tone gets me where I need to be for most of my recent gigs.

total agreement with the MV full on. its like my old 20 watt marshall but way more articulate, and dependable. i find that im swapping guitars for different degrees of grind. tinnitus be damned ;D ;D ;D

I normally keep the volume at 6, master at 10:00 is all I can get away with at church. Jamm'n at home with the wife on drums, I'll run the volume at 8, and I still only need the MV at 11:00 - 12:00 to keep up. Volume at 8, mv at least noon, boost on, and an Eternity for a little extra is it for me. The RxJr is loud for 15 watts. I play it through a Z 2x10 cab.
