HI,
I KNOW YOU SAID RX ES BUT IF MONEY'S A PROBLEM I THINK YOU MIGHT CONSIDER AN OLD PRESCRIPTION....I HAVE ONE AND LOVE IT.....YOU CAN FIND THEM EASIER THAN THE ES I WOULD THINK (A COMBO ON EBAY RIGHT KNOW W/ NO BID STARTING AT $999.00...)
AND IN MY OPINION (I'VE PLAYED THE ES AND HAVE AN RX ES ORDERED, BUT I AM ALSO GOING TO TRY TO KEEP / USE THE OLD RX!).... THEY ARE NOT THAT DIFFERENT, THE OLD ONE IS A LITLLE MORE RAW AND ALITTLE MORE PERCUSSIVE, AND THE ES IS A BIT SMOOTHER; STILL PERCUSIVE, BUT THE OVERALL SOUND BETWEEN THE AMP IS VERY SIMILAR.....
TO ME THE OLD RX HAS THAT KINDA CRANKED CARMAN GHIA SOUND ON STEROIDS, JUST ALOT OF HAIR ON IT...... THE RX ES CAN HAVE SOME OF THAT , BUT CAN GET A WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL CLEAN SOUND THAT HAS ALOT OF PRESENCE, AIRY QUALITY .....WHICH THE OLD RX CAN TOUCH ON (CLEAN WISE) BUT THE OLD RX HAS A BIT OF HAIR EVEN ON THE CLEAN......
I LOVE BOTH OF EM , GONNA RUN THE OLD RX THROUGH A CLOSED BACK Z-BEST CAB AND THE RX ES THTOUGH AN OPEN BACK 2X12 TO EXAGERATE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE AMPS.....
IF HIS HEART IS SET ON AN ES, GOOD LUCK AND KEEP LOOKING, MIGHT HAVE TO SAVE UP AND GET A NEW ONE THOUGH, I'VE ONLY EVER SEEN ONE, MAYBE TWO USED RX ES EVER.....
THIS MAY NOT HAVE HELPED BUT I KNOW MONEY CAN BE A PROBLEM, EITHER ONE IS WORTH EVRY PENNY!!!! ;D

Hi Jason Thanks for your reply. I think I would consider a used RX, but my son is looking for the best clean sound and thinks the ES has it. He also has 2 cabs, a Marshall 4X12 with vintage 30's and a local shop has a Z-Best cab we are working on a deal with that. So we really are looking for the head version. I did see the combo on ebay and actually told my sons guitar teacher about it because it looks like a nice buy. Pat

i can attest to the clean sound on the RXES. it's beautiful. it has great cleans and can have a great plexi aggression if you turn up the volume and mids. i love this amp.

Hey Pat, just an FYI...the price is now $1599.00 which includes the overdose pedal. Still a good deal on a great amp! Good luck, my son would be very jealous :-)

Patfont, Here is my son (the one with the shirt on ;D) playing thru my RXES. Since playing my RXES, he does not want to go back to his amp (brand name withheld). We both love the this amp. I seem to play my Z28 a little more, but the RXES is not going anywhere!!!! pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL203/986894/6134683/108440527.jpg

Cool picture jtracy Always good to see your kid getting into music, especially when they show appreciation for Dr Z amps. So at the risk of momentarily hijacking Pat's thread, here's one of my son working out my RxES.

Thanks for the pictures! It is so great to see the younger kids going for tone, and not doing the wall of sound clone thing (with you know what brand) Pat
