Anyone spent a good amount of time with both of these?
I loved my old model Rx but wasn't able to keep it. Great tone and I'm a bit disappointed that the Dr has discontinued it. I recently stumbled across some pics of my old Rx aand remembered how great it sounded. I'm sure that the new one sounds great too.
I hear the Xtra Strength is great but the only thing I have to go by are the clips at the Z website. The humbucker clips are cool(they sound more like what I remember), but I don't like the tone of Brads clips at all. A bit too dark for what I'm lookin for in the Rx.
So what is difference beetween the 2 really? Myles, you have to have tried both of these.

If you don't mind, I'd be glad to chime in on this one, since I have sold quite a few of the old Prescriptions and currently use the new one (ES) myself.
These amps are VERY different. The old Rx, was (IMO) a gainy, grainy, aggressive, Billy Gibbons/British style amp. With low output pickups, the old Rx could be a nice clean amp, but it always seemed like the old RX was just always waiting in the wings to be cranked up. I loved the old Rx for the aggressive old school British vibe it seemed to give.
The new RX ES, IMO, is completely different and to my ears, has the best clean tone I've ever heard and felt. It has an expanded frequency response (tons more low end and top end than most "vintage" style tube amps) that in some guys hands, the top end can be a little too "glassy", although I love it! The Paisley clips do sound dark, probably due to a combination of the way the tone stack is set and the way it is mic'd up. In my experience, the Rx ES is definitely NOT a dark amp, although its got low end for days!!! Personally, I am not too fond of most MP3 clips. Most people mic up with an SM57 and while this works, it tends to homogenize the sound clips, making everything kind of sound the same. The Paisley clips, IMO, are cool, especially to hear Brad just rip iff some stellar licks, but to my ears, they don't do justice to the clarity of the Prescription ES amp. I'm hearing more the sound of the mic than the amp, to my ears.

Thanks for the reply This is what I figured. I had heard that the new Rx is geared more toward single coils so I was afraid that the Dr took all the qualities away that made me love the old Rx so much. It looks like I will have to keep my eyes open for an old model Rx. What a beautiful machine it was. I hit some hard times right after I bought mine and only was able to keep it for about a month. I still dream about it

Howdy,
Would the original Prescription be sort of like a more powerful half-brother to the Carmen Ghia? The reviews on the orginal Prescription sure pique my interest. Eggman

If anyone is really interested...there is an original Rx for a decent price on eBay at this moment...I think it's a red one.

Eggman,
I have an original RX as well as a Ghia. I have had them both since 2001 so I know them well. I think they are different beasts. The RX reminds me of an extremely articulate 100-watt plexi (yes, it is that loud) whereas the Ghia has a much softer attack. To me, the RX sounds best with 2 g12hs and the Ghia sounds best with a single v30. While the ghia sounds good with 2 g12hs, the RX is far too harsh with a v30 in the mix. Both are my favorite. I have not craved a new amp since I purchased both.
