Well let me tell ya! I often rehearse in our music shop as our bass player works there. I have played the Mini Z and Epiphone valve jr side by side and there is NO and I repeat NO comparison. The Mini Z eats it for an hors d'oevres, burps it out and thinks about eating the next amp in the shop for mains! ;D bigger meaner, badder, better. Way more tone. Oh, mine's the original combo.

Much higher quality components in the Z, I'm sure. As in all things, you get what you pay for.

YOu can put about $500.00 of Mods, transformers and tubes into an Epi VJ, and it still won't sound like a Mini Z.
If you want to learn something about amps, modding the Epi VJ can be a good learning project (or frustration) and you can make them sound decent but it's not a Mini Z.

had a guy tell me that his modded Honda Civic was better than my Audi, too... ... though he couldn't verify that claim once we hit the highway

Same tubes: EL84 12AX7 What the difference? SP In a nutshell the difference is HUGE!! QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP AND COMPONENTS. The Epi VJ is a PCB with tubes mounted on the circuit board and stompbox-like components. The Mini-Z is a hand built p to p, with high quality components, finely crafted and designed amplifier. You don't have to mod the Mini-Z to make it do what it does! ;D

Not even close. One has tone (Mini Z) the other does not IMHO

Played them both: bought the Mini. The Epiphone was cool for what it is, and apparently is a cool platform to learn basic amp modding with but I just didn't dig the tone; sounded rather generic to me. The sales kid was pushing the Orange Tiny Terror on me pretty hard as well, but it just wasn't the tone I was after. It took about 5 minutes of playing to convince me that the Z was what I needed!
