Well as I'm sure you surmised, I'm a proud new owner of a Blonde SRZ-65! Straight from Humbucker Music to my door.
It's kinda funny...when I first started looking at Dr Z amps, I played the RxES, both Maz's and the Z28... loved all of them and was sold on buying a MazSr. A few years later and I own two Z's, neither of which is a Maz, or any of the bunch I played. Instead they're both amps I never even saw in person before I bought them... Weird how things work like that.
I'm still dialing it in, but like my Rt66, I don't think this amp is going anywhere... I'm REALLY digging it.
I definitely still love my 66, but the SRZ fills the exact role I was looking for: something to get those Zeppelin tones easily...sans pedals. Recently I'd been messing around with the Caitlinbread DLS with the 66 to get that kinda tone, which works pretty well, but this is much much better.
Master up to 3 o'clock, the gain not even up to 12 (using a Hotplate of course to keep from blowing my windows out), with my LP and it's classic hard rock all over the place. So, of course, I just spent 3-4 hours playing Zeppelin tunes... LOUDLY! Tomorrow I think I'll get the gain up a bit higher, maybe kick on my JavaBoost, and see how many Black Sabbath riffs I know... ;D
My only concern... This amp seems to get significantly hotter than my 66 ever does. I know it's a lot more powerful, I'm cranking it up and I'm attenuating it, but it just seemed a bit warm... warm enough that I moved my 66 so it wasn't sitting on top and so the SRZ had more room to breathe. Is this normal? Something to be concerned about?
I think my next step is a SRZ/66 AB rig. 66 for that cleanish smokey, bluesy sound, SRZ for heavy overdrive, back to the 66 for fuzz. Or maybe a blend of the two in some combination... should be fun.
Anyways, digging the SRZ a lot so far and I thought I'd share. Maybe it's because they were out of production for a while, but I don't understand why this amp isn't more popular... It sounds awesome...like a "Marshall/Orange Killer" to me.
