Could anyone give me a rundown on the differences, both physical and sonic, between the older Mazerati and the post-2003 version?
Is one cleaner than the other, and/or does one have more gain?
Is there any way to be sure to tell one from the other, or is it just as simple as a 2003 "N" prefix or a 2004 "O" prefix or higher?
I know this must have been asked before, but I can't dig it up with the search function.

The older (pre 2003) were known as the double powered Ghia. In 2003 they were redesigned with bigger and better transformers to define the sound of the amp , make the lower end tighter and basically make the amp more focused and clean.
The Mazerati is probably my favorite Z amp , It does the country (Brad Paisley Tone) really well and takes pedals really well to do rock type stuff.
I have not played an older one , but have been told they have a bit more gain and break up quicker.
You seem to have your dating right , N=2003,O=2004
I hope this helps I'm sure there are alot more guys out there that know more about these amps than I do .

I had an older one and it would not play clean, no matter what tubes I tried.

Billy,
Mine is a 2005, and it's a clean machine. I had it retubed at Eurotubes and I specifically asked for tubes to allow earlier breakup. The amp seems pretty immune to tube changes---ie it still sounds great. However, I have a hotter 12ax7 in there and with a volume boast it gets hairy sounding easier than before. I'll still say mine breaks up at 1 o'clock. I love the amp as it brings out the best elements of my strat and les paul like no other amp I've heard.

Mine actually would've made a good greasy blues amp. It sounded like a 40s Gibson amp but way louder, of course. It was smokin' as a Tele bridge pickup amp. that's what made me buy it. The problem is I've been playing swinging jazz/blues for years so this amp was just not a fit. I traded it right back in on a Maz 38 which was much more appropriate.

Fiestared, Was the 2003 model the new version, or was 2003 the last year for the old version? Seems like I've read it both ways.

Well guys,
I just got a Mazerati and on the inside it's dated Dec 8 1998. It sounds awesome to me but I've never compared it to a newer one. It's my first Z and I can honestly say that I'm quite impressed! A friend of mine introduced me to the Ghia in a session down here. I was blown away by what it sounded like so I picked it the bigger brother. Pretty cool stuff!!
