Hello fellow 'Z' Heads! I'm looking at aquiring a new Z! I'm considering the RX ES but I was wondering how loud you have to turn it up in order to get that ES dirt. Can it be achieved at low volumes? Or do you just have to crank those EL84s to get that sweet tone? Input always appreciated! Thanks Darryl

Loud! I would suggest an Airbrake. It's around noon with the Overdose on to get some dirt. With the Overdose off it's a bit closer to 1-2 o'clock.
If you want it at low volumes, I would suggest an RXJS. If you want clean to some "hair" on the notes, go with an RXES, and add an Airbrake to get the nice drive of the amp.

Does the JR maintain any cleans at high volume? or only dirt?

The Jr. breaks up at the same places as the ES, but is half the power (2 EL-84s). You might have a little trouble getting it over a loud drummer and keeping it squeaky clean.

I wish the ES had a master volume on it. Would make this decision alot easier. I'm thinking about an ES and just needing to get an airbrake. Thats probly the solution. BTW, how does the RX sound with your blue dog? Do you have alNico or ceramic magnet on your weber?

Mine's Alnico and it sounds great! I do get a bit earlier break-up with the alnico 1-12 vs. the Z-Best.
Where do you usually play though? That could make your decision right there.

The RXES is not a bedroom amp fellow forumite!
Without an airbrake and opened up with a tele it will take your head off.
The airbrake actually has a bedroom setting but even on that unless you maximum attenuate it cuts like a knife.
It's a superb amp, my favourite Z at present and I've had or owned 5 at one stage, but that will change soon enough but it's LOUD!!!
How about the RX Jr? That could be an option for you.

my RXES seems to get a lot dirtier before ya'lls do...maybe i need different tubes.
anyways, if you go with the RXES, an airbrake is a must (ordered mine after having my amp for about a week). It does a good job holding the volume down. Its a great amp

If you're playing the bedroom mostly and not really gigging, go with the Jr. It will be plenty for you.
