Ok, so I've owned my Galaxie for about 2 years and as of most recently had been attempting to sell it. In fact I actually sold it on ebay a few weeks back. You see, I recognized its great tone, but I had a few problems with it. First, it was bright, really bright, second, it seemed really bassy with my 4x10 and 1x12 open back cabs, and 3rd it was always too loud for home or small jam sessions, but it didn't quite fit in with my band, the 6545 traditionally had held that spot. Also since I had gotten a Z28 about a year prior the old Galaxie was really out of the mix. Too nice of amp to sell but not getting any attention.
But now I was in a position where I really needed raise some $$ - I had just bought a 57 historic reissue Les Paul gold top on a whim and being a responsible citizen was looking to pay-off the rest of the evil credit card. So up on craigslist and ebay she went, and truthfully she had been there before, but I just wasn’t ready to sell such a great amp for under $1100 (which is effectively what you get if you sell for $1200 after all the friggin fees). But now I needed to sell, price $1100 "all in" (meaning I’d get maybe $1000 – ugh). And yes it sold a day later for $1100.
That weekend my wife was away, so I had the house to myself and the opportunity to try out the Les Paul with all three of my amps and various cabs, in the house, at volume! Could take my time, hang out in the pj’s, drink coffee, crank my amps, tweek stuff, and all without having to lug all this crap down to the studio and squeeze in between a bunch of other equipment – glorious times.
That’s when the discovery happened. I plug the Galaxie into a 4x12 sealed cab with greenbacks and the les paul – wholly crap, that sounds amazing – great break-up on the clean, not too much bass, more mids than I have ever gotten from the Galaxie, all that mixed with the already amazing break-up of channel 1 and smooth saturated overdrive of channel 2. Hmm, do I really want to sell this thing? Next I pulled out the 1x12 cab w/a g12-65 (which I had added a beam blocker recently), stuffed a pillow in the back to seal it and cut the lows. Fired it up. Crap – sounded just as good as the 4x12, only portable and light. Crap I definitely don’t want to sell it!! This amp matches the les paul so well its crazy! The grit, the sharpness, the saturation and sustain, seriously amazing tone.
So now I’m bummed because the amp is already sold. Sure I could get another one off ebay for close to this price, but I know mine is mint in every way, and well you take your chances buying online. Well, to end a long winded story – the buyer flakes and doesn’t pay and delists from Ebay. I’m home free! The first time I’ve come across a non-payer and it just happened to be when I would have shed a tear having to send her off. So all is right with the world and I look forward to every chance I get to crank her up. ;D
