For those of you that need to get high gain OD sounds out of your Mazerati, what are you using? I play in a band that covers a lot of sonic and stylistic territory, and for some tunes I need to get that real thick, heavy, compressed OD tone. The thing is, the Mazerati seems to excel at that pristine, fat clean thing and with my Tele (my main guitar) it has an almost acoustic-like quality. I'm using a Barber Direct Drive right now for high gain tones, but when combined with that bell-like cleanliness of the Mazerati, it's almost got too much of a clean bite folded into the distortion. Hard to describe, really. I do realize that with a Tele I'm never going to get it to sound like a Les Paul through a Marshall So what are you guys using?

How's it goin?
I've had good luck with my Maxon SD9 (Analogman modded). It can have a bit too much low end sometimes, though. I get some nice higher-gain tones by stacking a couple of overdrives, too. I'm running a Zendrive into a Timmy and getting some nice sounds. I'm still looking for the perfect high-gain box, though. I've heard some cool sounding samples of the Subdecay Blackstar, and MI Audio is supposed to be coming out with a new distortion pedal, too. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.
PS - Still liking that Tonker?

PS - Still liking that Tonker? jz Hey John, It's going well, how 'bout you? Saw in another post that you were back up in these parts recently. One of these times we should meet up, talk music and Z's and I'll buy you a beer, coffee, or an appropriate social beverage of some sort. First of all, I'm really diggin' the Tonker. My Mazerati sounds like a big giant piano now. ;D The amp just breathes. I know I'm still in the honeymoon period, and I won't be gigging it until this weekend, but it sounds so good that I'm spending a lot of time playing, plugged straight in with no effects. That should tell you something. Thanks for the comments about the OD's, I'll do some research on them (although I may have to buy a Subdecay Blackstar for the name alone, even if it sounds like crap). That Zendrive+Timmy combo must sound awfully nice. Like I said, the Mazerati + Tele is such a pure, round tone that it's making me wonder if I need a really specific voice of OD to get the tone I'm after. The Barber Direct Drive is nice, but it ain't "it". I'm fairly happy with the Barber LTD but it doesn't do the high gain thing. If I stumble onto anything interesting, I'll post it here.

Hey man,
The palate of OD sounds is huge, but if your looking for a big muff type sound, sort of a mix between marshall crunch, multin lava fuzz, I'd try out the Baja Tech MOAF. He sells them on ebay, often going for around $100. I've got one, and it is absolutely sick. It makes my Mazerati sing like nothing else. For more traditional OD sounds, I use a Vodka Mods Ts-9.

Well, I just ordered an MI Audio Crunchbox - I'll report back when I get it. It's supposed to be a Plexi-type pedal, so I'm really looking forward to checking it out.

JZ, where did you order your Crunch Box from? I just checked around a bit and can't find any in stock. Just curious, just in case... ;>)

Hey
I got mine from Tonefactor.com. I just happened to check their site and saw that it was listed as out of stock, so I called and they actually had 5 left. I just got home today, so I'll give it a good test and report back.

Mosferatu, it will end any and all of your high gain needs and then some.

Mosferatu, it will end any and all of your high gain needs and then some. I actually tried a Mosferatu at a friend's house yesterday along side a Crunch Box. They were both very, very nice, but for what I want to hear the Crunch Box won. Mine gets here Thursday from Guitarville in Seattle (thanks for the tip on this pedal, JZ - one Karma headed your way). The Mos seemed to have a slightly more nasal midrange - not an unpleasant voice at all, but just not what I want to hear. That same friend also let me use his Zendrive for my gig on Friday (yes, he has a whole bunch of very nice pedals), and holy crap gee whiz gosh darn jeezum crow that pedal really does live up to the hype. I really want one now but there's like a 14 year wait, or you can buy one from a scalper on eBay for 8 billion dollars. p.s. I was just thinking, we should be able to redeem Karma points for prizes, kinda like the old Mallo Cup things where you'd get the cardboard coins. Just a thought. ;>)

I've only fooled around with mine at the house - got a week-long gig next week so that will be the test (playing in St. Louis area if anyone wants to come hang out.) Still want to try that Blackstar, too.

Hey guys, keep this thread alive and keep me up to date with the Blackstar and any other high gainers. I agree, that is a cool name for a pedal! Cheers

Well, just got done with the first gig with the Crunch Box on the board. I think it will boot my Maxon SD9 off! It's a great box for the higher-gain Marshall stuff - I used it on a bunch of tunes and it was lots of fun. The sound guy said it sounded great out front, too. I'm keeping the tone rolled back to around 10 o'clock or so and the gain around 12 to 1 o'clock. It sounds really nice with the gain lower, too. So far it's a keeper. I've got 4 more shows this week, so I'll see how I feel after that.

Right now I'm using three pedals with my Rati.....a Crunch Box, a Blue Boy Deluxe and a Blues Pro. When I run the CB and the BP together it is pretty darn cool. I got all three pedals from pedalspluseffectswarehouse. The CB is especially fun with my tele. I have the tone around 10 o'clock and the gain pretty low around 9:30 I guess. At this setting it has just enough of that "Marshall" attitude without being too much. Really great pedals at fantastic prices.

i liked FD2 with the boost cranked for high gain through 'Rati the best. Stampede's SOV-1 was OK, too.

I know Boss pedals aren't too popular, but I use a Boss od-3 and it's got a really nice thick tone. It reacts well to the amp and responds well to the amount of attack. It might not be high gain enough for what you want, but it's pretty stinging if you put the drive control full on.

I use a Fulltone GT500 right now through a Mesa Boogie Blue Angel and it sounds great for those kind of rock tones. I just bought my first Rati (and first Z for that matter) and am sure the OD on the box will still sound great... but am not as sure about the added F.E.T. distortion side... Any thoughts from the bright folks posting here?

Don't know much about the Fulltone pedals with Mazerati's. I do use Cusack Screamer, Hermida Zendrive pedals and they sound great with the "voxy" characteristic of the amp. Good first choice by the way. I bought the Mazerati first...and the Z amp infatuation began. I luv em! Good luck.

I can hardly wait to get it plugged in. Thanks 6strang.
I'm also semi-worried though. If these things sound as good as I expect them to, I have a feeling I'm going to have to start restructuring my budget to afford all the Z stuff I'm going to desire. ;D The Remedy sounds like a fantastic idea and I'm super anxious to hear the Z-verb in action.

So I got ride of the GT500, great pedal, but as mentioned in the earliest posts, almost too much clean bite folded into the distortion. Didn't work out so well.
However, I'm finding the stacking thing works well. I've got a Red Llama Clone from Eddie going into a TS9 and that seems to do nice things. Not quite the "hi gain/plexi" type thing, but pleasing tones none the less.
I took some earlier advice from 6strang and I have a Zendrive coming in on trade. Also a Zvex Box of Rock which I hear good things about for getting that higher gain tone. Any thoughts on the Zvex here?

hey guys. i second the fd2 for a great lower drive sound but for my money it's the vintage rat! I have owned & built several and that's my taste. i have played them through ghia's, stangs, rati's, and fender.

I'm using a small box 80's RAT, it's good. I am also "currently" using the Fulltone GT500. I keep changing my opinion of that pedal. I have decided that through the Rati, I like the 9v better than 12v. I havent' tried it at 18v, but I imagine it would just keep getting more and more bite as you increase power. At 9v it's as fat as it will get.
I just ordered a Flying Dragon, which can run from 9v to 18v, I may try to get the 18v adapter and see what happens to both the FD and the GT500.
Gt500 can be high gain, but it's a bit much on the distortion, at 9v you can turn up the gain knob to 12:00, or 1/2 and still roll off your guitar's volume to clean it up. I think that I liked my budda Phatman better than the GT500, at least at lower volumes.

I'm still having fun with a Zendrive on mine for most things, but when I want to kick it up a notch, the Home Brew Electronics Big D is really my go to pedal at this point. I use it on some of the more "tame" settings and it's still pretty aggressive. Move it into the higher gain settings and .... yeesh. It will take your head off.
And yes, it's probably more a "distortion" pedal than an "OD" pedal.... but there's still a lot of Rati' that sneaks through into that tone...

Another alternative for your hi gain needs is to stack a Barber Dirty Bomb or an OCD along with a Timmy and you'll have so much control on how you want your hi gain mojo. The Dirty bomb has tons of usable gain and the Timmy has that wonderful EQ that makes it such a popular OD. I go between the OCD and Dirty Bomb with my Timmy for my Mazerati.
