Hey everyone
I'm going to email the Doc, but I wanted to run this by you guys and see if anyone ever had this issue. My Mazerati seems to have developed a real mid to upper mid harshness. I don't think it's been a gradual thing - I can almost pinpoint when I noticed it. It's making all of my OD pedals sound kind of crappy, too! I've tried swapping out all of the tubes, so I don't think that is the problem. I've also plugged straight in to make sure it wasn't pedal-related. A couple of other people even noticed the change in tone, so I know it's not my neurotic guitar player ears. I've tried different guitars and a different speaker, too. I'm wondering if something got knocked loose somewhere (I travel a lot) and if there is something I could look for if I take it apart. Thanks and I hope everyone has a great Christmas (or "Holiday Season" for the politically correct folks ;D )

This is a real shot in the dark, but have you tried changing your guitar cable? I have had some pretty strange things throw me off track before.

No ideas here JZ, but I go nuts sometimes trying to get a consistent tone when you consider that every room sounds diffferent, AC quality is different every place you play, and even where and how the amp is placed changes things. It's the age old problem of the amp sounding fantastic at one gig and then flat at the next one and you haven't changed a thing. Anyway, please let us Mazerati owners know how you make out with it - I'd be curious to know what's causing the problem.

Well - I'm hoping it's one of those freak things that just goes away on it's own! I'm gonna start working on it today and see if I can figure something out. What really bugged me was that two other people noticed the change in tone. I'll report back when I get it ironed out.
Take care,
jz

Here's a thought...Could it be cone cry on the 12" speaker possibly? Those Celestion 12's can get a weird harsh, out of tune, midrange "skronk" thing happening if the voice coil rubs on the magnet. I've had Celestions do this when they get knocked around occasionally. It will usually pop up on notes around the 12th fret on the high E string. Especially Vintage 30's and G12H30's. Ask Z about it, he'll know, and its a warranty issue if the speaker's new.

Hey JZ- Paul here aka 6Strang...I have not noticed any woofing yet in my 1X12 combo. I would trust your ears as you are a tone monster. Let us know if you find the issue. Maybe it is the speaker?
Just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year and best of luck with your Mazerati prob. Maybe I will catch you out at the Ameristar in MO, or in Nashvegas.
Thanks for all the great advice and pedalboard tips.
My best, 6strang

Hey Paul - great to hear from you (and welcome to the board!) Well - after a little poking around the problem turned out to be me being a bonehead . I recently changed out a tone pot in my Strat and for some strange reason I had the ground wire from the pot casing going to the middle lug on the other tone pot. I'm assuming that this sent the signal thru some extra stuff (another pot and cap?). After correcting this, everything is peachy once again. BTW - I changed the bridge tone control to a 1 Meg pot with a .022 Hovland Musicap - I can actually use the tone control now. It lets me tweak the highs without getting all muffled - I'm pretty happy with it. Happy New Year everyone! jz

I don't seem to lose any gain at all when I back the tone knob off. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the cap, though. Some people say that the value of the cap is the only thing that affects the tone, not the type of cap. I still caved and bought the Hovland, though . Maybe your tone knob is rolling off too many highs - that might sound like a loss in gain. You could try a higher value pot and/or a lower value cap (I'm liking the .022, but you could even go lower.) The lower the cap value, the more highs remain when you roll down your tone. Same with the higher value pot (I used a 1 Meg pot). There are lots of resources on the web for this - I'm just getting into it lately. Let me know if you need any help. Take care, jz
