Specifically EL-84s, but how about pre-amp tubes as well?

I use Groove Tubes for the EL-84's, which are manufactured by JJ. When I go to replace them i'll just get some good matched JJ's from Mike at kca nos tubes.
For the preamp tubes, I am running a Ratheon longplate 12AX7 in V1, a Mullard EF-86 in V2 and one of the stock tubes (I believe it's a JJ 12AX7) in V3 (my second Raytheon went insanely microphonic on me). I am getting ready to order a Sovtek to go in V3.

original strength not es
got JJ's in there now. NOS Phillips were my favorite el84 but they got tooooo spendy. Matched current issue phase invertor (pretty sure it's Sovtec but wouldn't swear to it) and NOS RCA 12ax7. also ran NOS GE ax7 but liked the RCA better. A 5751 in the PI or P1 adds a nice touch of woodiness to the guitar tone with hollow bodies and cleans it up some but i liked the as7 better

i'm thinking about trying new tubes in mine. i'm wanting a little more clean headroom (mine seems to get dirty a lot sooner then everybody elses from the posts i've read). any suggestions? (note that i've never bought tubes before)

I have a RXES i run Groove tube JJs EL84s and 2 nos RCA 12ax7s and a dario EF86 sounds really big and full. i run the over drive mode on all the time (clean.) I run a keeley clean boost to play clean leads. for chunky rythm i run a keeley blues driver at low drive settings running it at at 18 volts (it really makes the pedal have clean headroom and still crunchy) and i run a xotic bb preamp for leads. this amp loves pedals it sounds amazing!! i play 52 tele 57 strat and i also run a keeley compressor. it makes a big impact on the sound keeping things even.

I stayed with the stock GT from the good Doc, but replaced the 12ax7's with 5751's in V1 and V3. Got more headroom and a nice warm tone too!

Well JJ makes the Groove Tube tubes, so you can go with either JJ or GT. The GT's are a little pricier (the markup on a markup type of thing that goes with private labeling). I've recently started to purchase the JJs from Bob at Eurotubes. I just sent him an email telling what type of music I play/sound I'm looking for and what my current GT # was, and he picked out a set of tubes that would fit the bill. Don't know quite how he does it, but they sound great. And they were quite a bit less expensive than going the GT route. I think I stayed with GT for so long, just because if I needed to get them in a pinch, I could just stop by GC or SamAsh and pick them up. Now, I just order matched Quads and have the spares. The 5751's that I got are just Sovtek's. I've never gone the NOS route, and other 5751's may be better, but these seem to work ok - I think I used them because that was what was in the Carmen Ghia when I purchased it new (but I could be wrong). Hope this helps. Tom
