Hello all,
I just picked up my first Dr. Z.... a 6545 of course. I've only played through the amp a few hours, and REALLY like what I hear so far. It's a big departure, from the Peavey JSX I've been using the past couple years, and the Marshall TSL before that. I can tell it's going to take some time to really settle into my personal groove with this baby.....but I can tell it's there! We're playing a lot more blues, smattered with some classic rock, and the 6545 seems like the perfect fit.
I've read all the threads in this section, and it's been very helpful. I have a few questions that will really help me get a jump-start:
Once I have my reading, how do I bias this amp? Is there a trim-pot somewhere? [glow=red,2,300]There is a trim pot on the turret board. Pretty easy to spot when you open it up.[/glow]
Which tubes are the best to use? I know this is subjective, but I'd really appreciate input from avid users! [glow=red,2,300]My favorites are: SED EL34 or, if you can find them, the old Siemens EL34/6CA7 for power tubes. As for pre-amp tubes get an NOS EF86. Only way to go there (Mullard, GEC, Dario) are all great. Also, get an NOS rectifier tube too. Nothing beats the NOS types. As for 12AX7 types just personal preference (I like JJ ECC83, Tung Sol 12AX7, or even the new Mullard 12AX7). Biggest thing is to buiy from a reputable dealer like Mike over at KCA NOS Tubes.[/glow]
I have a 2x12 Avatar cab with V30's. Seems like swapping one with a G12H 30 may be worth a try. Thoughts? [glow=red,2,300]That will be good. Will give a good multi-dimensional sound. Doc's fave, from memory, is a pair of green backs. [/glow]
Finally, an attenuator is a must! I have a THD Hotplate, but wondered if the Airbrake is a much better choice, or if what I have will do. I don't really dislike the Hotplate. [glow=red,2,300] Hotplate should be fine. Just make sure it is rated correctly.[/glow]
Thanks all for your input. Looking forward to other discussions soon!!!
