Pulled the Silver Bell Alnico 50 watt for a 112 cab (for the 6545 and the Route 66) and dropped in a 1230-55 (which is his version of the original G12H30) to pair with the Weber Alnico Blue already in the amp.
The Sr is SMOKIN! The 1230 has a deep low end - combined with the Alnico Blue the amp is just slammin! This combo REALLY puts the Sr in the Vox/Matchless camp but with a nice Z grind to it. Was quite surprised by the change in the amp's character with this speaker. I'm SOO stoked I can't explain....
I've used the G12H30/Blue combo in the past and really liked it; but, the Weber combo just sounds SOOOO much better than the new RI Celestions. One complaint of the Celestion G12H30 is the upper mid harshness...it's not there in the Weber, but all the low end and aggressive nature are.
Have some rehearsals and shows this week...going to put the setup thru some paces.

What's the difference between the 1230 and the 1230-55 in laymans terms. I read something about paper cones, but I'm not sure what all that means in the end. I've got a friend who's looking at these for his Vox AC30 CC. The Vox currently has 2 Weber 12A150A's in it that I installed for him last year. (Same speaker that comes in the low power Tweed Twin.) He also runs an extension cab with 2 Emi Red Fangs. I'll be inheriting the Webers as payment for the speaker swap and a pedal I modded for him.

I think the difference is the 55 carries/handles lower frequencies. Tapping the cone, it's a deep/low tone. It's nice. Would love to try that speaker in a Jr sometime - since it's a little lighter in the low end than the Sr. That speaker might bring out some neat tones hiding in the amp.

Oh Man, Just when I thought my speaker gas was subsiding. Dan now you've done it again! ;D Sounds like a great setup thanks for the info. Now I just need to grab that empty 2x12 blond cab from Ronnie... Hummm...

Had the SR at the gig last night - working against a huge (12 subs and flown top) PA and monitors (2 per person, side fills). Maz was cranked and rippin my head off...but in a good way. The 1230-55 really cut thru the clutter. EQ at the FOH console was completely flat - had nice comments from the engineers about the amp/tone. Clean, articulate - full on drive and could hear every note of a chord (was a FDII - used an RC to kick it in the pants for leads). Low end did seem a bit loose onstage though - not sure if it was the room or the speaker change. Had a more vintage style drive character - like the drive from a cranked amp. That kind of loose low end. The dualing alnicos have a smoother/less articulate top/bottom where adding the ceramic brought in that articlate top/bottom - so everything played low/high registers was more present. Amp was a bit stiffer vs the compressed/sag w/the dualing alnicos. It's about time for a tube change (eh, I'll blame Jayson ;D) - has been a while and the amp has had a LOT of time on it. Going to replace the EL84's and then give it another whirl at some upcoming shows. Will add I became a huge fan of the PRS McCary last night too... that's an extremely versatile guitar. Sounded amazing thru the SR and really responsive to playing style...pups can get a touch nasally when coil-tapped but rolling the treble down another click or two pulls it back in. Enjoyable to play...

That speaker is my favorite weber speaker. In fact, I think it's even better than the original celestion G12h-30.

You know this post got me thinking. I have a Celestion Blue in my Maz 18 and a G12H Anniversary in my 1X12 DRZ cabinet. Well i put them together. A very nice blend. All the things that you don't like about a blue gets added in with the G12H. I think the G12H adds the fullness and punchyness that the Blue doesn't have. I would still like to try the Weber combination though. YMMV

Poor Dan-o... Tweaks & tweaks & tweaks, and then I come through town, use his amp and try to blow it up!! ;D
Seriously, though.. Dan's 38 sounds amazing...*Maybe* better than the one I used to have. Sounded fantastic with the two alnico's in there, but I can imagine it's got even a bit more cajones now.
Hmmm...1230-55.... Now ya got me thinking, too..

Would/ could Weber make that speaker (1230-55) in a higher wattage than the 30 watts?? say maybe a 50 watter... or would that defeat the purpose/ good qualities of that speaker??
the reason I ask is I LOVE the ceramic silver bell in 50 watt with the blue but this is a speaker that I would like too, and would offer a little different tone... think I'd need a little higher wattage though.
Jayson?? Mr Weber? Bueller..... Bueller........ ;D

You'll lose some of the sensitivity & vibe, but you'll pretty much get the same tone with more punch, headroom, dynamics. But the 30 watt would be fine, I'm sure. Webers are OVERBUILT. Ted recently told me that the new 1225, which is a 25 watt version of the Greenback 12m-25, would easily take the punishment of a MAZ 38 or Route 66 with no problem. And I'm talking about a 1 12" cab! J

Put in a new set of EL84S's last night and the low-end tightened back up. Before the tube swap I tried some different speaker combinations and they all seemed a bit farty so I knew it wasn't the 1230-55. Sounds great! ;D Hmmm...1230-55.... Now ya got me thinking, too.. Humm... Sounds like the 1230-55 would hold up in a 1x12 when being pushed (pummeled if JC) by a Maz Sr.

Hey Drew, How ya doin? I put a 1230-55 in my MAZ SR verb with beam blocker, killer. But, as J Chance says " tweak, tweak, and tweak. I am having Weber build a 30watt-ceramic 1230 with a Weber "N" cone (not sure what that is). I'll let you know how it sounds. It's incredible how a different speaker can change the voice so dramatically on a Z amp. Have fun. Rick

Thanks Rick. Let me know how it turns out. I agree and am amazed by the difference a speaker makes. Lately I'd been using a Weber Alnico 50w blue dog but for kicks I decided to go with an emi texas heat cab at a Sat night gig. Man, I missed that weber BD loaded cab.

Can anyone help me decide between a 30 watt ceramic silver bell or one of these 1230-55's with same magnet and wattage?
I like things aggressive, bright, punchy and tight and bold in the bottom. Looking for sparkle type SRV lenny tones when volume is backed off ...............and then classic rock marshall tones with a cranked humbucker. I don't want any overbearing mids and definately nothing "dark".
Thanks
What would be the main differences between the 2 speakers?

Easiest option, ask the man himself - he has a section in the "Ask the Experts" area. Ted will steer you the right way!! To me (ymmv), The Silver Bell has a bit of a woody tone to it with an aggressive top end (character of the magnet). The 1230-55 has what I would consider a balanced tone - fairly flat eq - with an aggressive top end (again the magnet). Has more low end than the Silver Bell. Again, to me, the Silver Bell puts a bit more if its personality into the tone where the 1230 doesn't. Either will get you the cranked Marshall tones...depends if you're after a Greenback or a G12 flavor. If you're after the Greenback, Weber just released a new speaker...believe Jayson Chance has a post about it in the Speakers and Cabs section of the forum. Can anyone help me decide between a 30 watt ceramic silver bell or one of these 1230-55's with same magnet and wattage? I like things aggressive, bright, punchy and tight and bold in the bottom. Hey Curt,
I'm all set for my z 28. Running it thru a weber C 12f150, 30 w. I have tried a lot of speakers, incl. the greenie, with my z 28 and my ears are loving this one right now......really loving it! It satisfies the fender side of things of course, however, to my ears it just plan does it all. Sparkle when you back it down, huge tight bottom, and rockin' mids.
I totally pounded it into submission for about 10 total hrs.......high volume and it's just getting sweeter sounding with the z 28 everytime I play.

so.....................I am looking for a single 12 for my SR. Wondering if this G12h30 "clone"provement is the ticket. I guess my question is whether it sounds nice and clean with the volume backed down on the guitar. What i keep running into when trying all these new speakers lately is that I am losing "highs" when backing off the volume on my axe. The greenback did that to me in my z 28, the texas heat is doing that right now in my Sr........ ( I do have bleed circuits on all my guitars......so its not the axe)
I tried a 50 watt ceramic silver bell about a year ago and hated it, HOWEVR, I was new to the game and did not really let it break in AT ALL, and I probably should have tried the 30 watter as well.
So now I am either thinking a 30 watt silver bell with proper break-in for my SR, or a 1230-55. ( All ceramic!!!!) Recently learned I am not an alnico guy.
Input?

19jmm68 the problem with high rolling off may be more to do with your guitar than the speaker. Its real common to loose some highs when you roll down. In my guitars I have put the RS Guitarworks kits in... they use some special CTS Superpot, and a Hovland guitar cap. The drop in highs is now much less. Anyway my take on all this is that its probably your guitar.

My 1230-55 came in and its now in a Z 1x12 cab. It is taking awhile to break in, that 55 cone with light dope was a little tight when I first got it in. I am cranking the amp about 20 minutes or so a day to help it along. I was surprised that the bass end was not bigger, my Z 2x10 actually seems to have more bass than the 1x12 Weber. How is this speaker as far as break in, and how is it working for you guys now?

It's articulate, warm with a great full low/low mid response. Cuts thru the mix like a chainsaw (that's a good thing). I absolutely love to hit it with a drive pedal. Keep 'beating' on it - plug in a CD player, boost the bass and volume on the amp, close the door and leave the room. Helps break 'em in a bit faster

Funny you should mention the cd thing. I came home today, took the cab with the 1230-55 into the garage and hooked up a cd player to a transistorized bass amp then hooked up the cab. I am playing SRV at some good levels.... I can hear it through my walls blasting away :-) Then I come into the house and log onto the Z websight and read,"Keep 'beating' on it - plug in a CD player, boost the bass and volume on the amp, close the door and leave the room. Helps break 'em in a bit faster". Go figure... great minds think alike :-)

I just posted on the speaker page about my 1230-55. For some reason the +and - needed to be switched. When I reversed the polarity the speaker opened up and I had a ton of treble and all the tone I was missing before. Sometimes on speakers or cab wiring the polarity can get reversed so be sure to check it out, don't take it for granted that it is correct.

I would think that this speaker combo (Weber Blue Alnico + Weber 1230-55) would be great in any of the Z amps. You still have the nice british chime from the blue and the very balanced, low end of the 1230-55. One does not overpower the other, they seem to mix very well together with a full spectrum of sonic bliss.

I am having trouble with this speaker. Its making odd sounding harmonics especially on low notes. I bought another one from Speakertone.com last night so I could a-b test it out. Anyway I think there is something wrong with the voice coil and I will need to send it back to Weber for repair.
