I think I've gotta wait until the canadian $$$ gets better again...I've made this mistake in the past, paid an extra $300 for my Stangray by buying it a few months too early...

Is the rectifier a plug-in like the other solid state rectifiers, or is it hardwired in?

Hey Curt, do tell, how does the Remedy compare to the SRZ-65? I know they aren't the same, but how are they different?

Post by stuey222 on Jan 7, 2009 22:31:16 GMT -7
That's different. If I recall correctly, the past ones that were solid state from the factory just had a copper cap.

Do the tone controls work similar to a Z28 - anything past 12:00 adds gain?

I'll take a shot at this before Curt gets in here and gives us the definitive answer. ;D He's had multiple SRZ's and spent some time with the Curt.....er, Remedy. I've got an SRZ and got to play the Remedy for a while at Doc's shop. When I get my Remedy of course I'll know more. They're definitely two very different amps. The SRZ is sort of based on a JCM800, it's got two EL34's operating in ultralinear mode, a tube rectifier, a master volume, and a cascaded gain preamp. The Remedy's got four 6V6's, and more of the "Plexi" gain structure, no master volume, and is solid state rectified. Plus, it's got the "jumpered" parallel hi/lo channel setup. So what does this add up to? The SRZ to me is more of a straight ahead rock amp. It's gainy from the start, with not much clean headroom. It does clean up when you turn the guitar's volume down, but I've never gotten a "great" clean sound doing that like I can on the Mazerati GT. The SRZ isn't the most percussive amp Z makes...it's got a good attack but nothing like the original Rx, RxES, or KT-45. It's got that "cathode follower" touch where notes get brighter as you pick harder. The lows are good (better than most Marshalls I've played) but not "prominent"; the mids have that EL34 crunch and the highs sizzle. Of course there's a Presence control too. It sounds surprisingly good for a 65-ish watt amp at low volumes. The master works really well; the tone with the gain "up" and the master set low are really good, although the amp really wants to be cranked, at which point the power tubes come into play and it's *loud*. To me the SRZ is a more "upper mid in a Marshall kind of way" dominant amp. The Remedy is a quite different. It's got a more "complex" tone in some ways by virtue of having four power tubes. I've always thought four-power tube amps have that "something extra" harmonically- like the RxES, Fender Twin, Stangray, MAZ 38, Marshall 100W, etc. EVH wouldn't have sounded the same through a 50W, IMO- still really great, just different. The Remedy has a *really* percussive attack- it reminded me of the original Rx and my KT45. Each note is very defined, which helps it stand out in a mix or on stage. Listen to the Z-Fest "Can't You See" video- that part before the song starts when Curt's talking about the amp. In person, when you just hit the muted strings like Curt did it hits you in the chest like he KT-45. The "feel" is very different from the SRZ- the Remedy is even more interactive and touch sensitive as far as getting different shades of gain right from your fingers and guitar's volume control. The Remedy is more versatile than the SRZ, due to the two "internally jumpered" channels and the 1/2 power switch. The two channels let you change change the sound in ways that "normal" tone controls can't quite do. Of course it still has bass, mid, and treble controls that work really well. The bass to me has that great tight "impact" that I love in the KT45. The mids are thick, sort of Route 66-ish, not the cutting mids of the SRZ. The treble is very smooth, not as pronounced as the SRZ, more like the EZG-50's. There's a lot of clarity and the 6V6 "thing" in the sound; very different from the EL34's of the SRZ but Marshally at the same time thanks to the preamp (which really determines tone structure in any amp). The tone controls are more "conventional" tone controls like the EZG or MAZ... not like the Route 66/Z28/KT45/Delta88 "gain/tone" controls. The half power switch is the best one I've heard in any amp. It does cut the volume while still retaining all the "feel" of the 40W setting. It doesn't have quite the impact of the full power setting, but that's to be expected when cutting the power in half and therefore pushing less air through the speakers. I did have a blast playing my Hendrix and Trower licks through it at the half power setting; that's what counts to me. Even Amy said it sounds great; she appreciated the lower volume My first thoughts after playing the Remedy was that it combines what I love in a few different Z amps. First and most importantly, it has the percussiveness I love in the KT45. It has the "6v6 thing" I love in the Z28, especially on the 1/2 power setting. It's got a great midrange like the Route 66, and tight bass like all Z's. It's got a great "clear but not harsh" EZG-50 like high end, and touch sensitivity like the original Rx. You might be able to tell I like this amp...

Thanks Phil, I didn't realize you have an SRZ, so that helps a ton. Plus you just answered about twenty other questions that are about to start popping up here.

As a Route 66 owner I felt I've had "my" amp for some time. The description of this amp seems to play into my playing styles as well.
How much clean headroom/dirty can I expect from the Remedy as comapred to the Route 66?
More clean head room? More dirt too?

The Remedy attaches yer big E string directly to the speaker cone. "THWACK" Game over for me.........been searching for that for 28 years. My take on the 1/2 power switch is, Country/Blues switch as it has excellent head room in full power and delicious crunch and sustain @ 1/2 power. takes pedals great as with every Z amp. Crank this amp up past 1/2 volume and Angus tone erupts ...sweetness. The tone controls, as anyone who has spent time with a vintage Marshall will know, do not have a wide range, subtle differences, but enough to get your tone, but you'll likely end up with them all close to noon, or all maxed. Then use the two volumes to dial in to the speaker and guitar.....super quick to dial in. World class design taken to the new melinium buy the good folks at Dr Z amps. This amp, for me, will play any kind of music, in any venue, with any guitar for me and how I play. No, it will not be sold.....ever....although every other amp may be, that alone should tell you something.

Wow this amp sounds like it's awesome... not that I'd expect anything else. Now, I really want to hear what it sounds like with an LP plugged in... cranked up to 11! And to think, just when I had decided my next Z would be a KT45...
Also, am I the only one who thinks that the Doc now needs to make a 4 kt66 amp? Would that be possible? Maybe one that just happens to have the jumpered channels (love those jumpered channels) like the Remedy? Cause I think I'd be all over that... yeah, definitely be all over that. It's be a good partner for the 66... ;D

I can hardly wait to hear sounds clips of this amp. I wonder how it compares with the Doc's 210 vs 112 cabs?

You guys can talk 10's all you want. ;D (duck, weave, run) I'm thinkin my 1-12 with custom celestian 35 watt greenie, Z-Best and yes, I just can't stop thinking about it, 4x12 with greenies is gonna be the way to go for me. With those speakers and 20/40 watts I can play anywhere, anytime. (I'm staying positive I can get this amp)
ROCK!
