Hi guys,
There was some nasty weather on the west coast this past weekend, so I was delayed in getting home until this Tuesday night. Since I spend so much time away from home, I had my Maz GT delivered to my parents' house. I bought Mazerati GT #4 from a fellow Z Bro, and I FINALLY got to pick her up today.
Before we get things started, here's a picture:
As you can see, she's a beauty, but then again, I'm biased.
The Mazerati GT is pretty close to what I expected. I have exact clones of the Trainwreck Liverpool, Express, and Rocket, and the GT has been widely advertised by Dr. Z Amps as Doc's take on the Trainwreck family of amps. As a matter of fact, Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Circuits designed the transformer set for the GT.
The Maz GT is closest in layout to the Trainwreck Rocket. It uses two 12AX7s in the preamp, four EL84s, a GZ34 tube rectifier, and a choke. The big differences are that the GT only has two knobs, and only 2 preamp tubes.
Based on my experience with my Wrecks, I sort of knew how to dial it in pretty quickly. The GT is very sensitive to a player's touch, as responds pretty well to picking dynamics and volume controls. As most of you have heard, the GT cleans up by using the guitar's volume knob, then gets downright surly when you max out the volume. The distortion voicing is pretty cool...almost an out-of-phase sort of tone...kind of like you're running through a wah pedal with stepping back and forth on it.
In comparison to the Wreck clones, the GT seems to be a little louder, and is a little less gainy. I'd attribute that to only two preamp tubes, and really large transformers.
The only other important point to make about the Mazerati GT is that THIS IS ONE LOUD AMPLIFIER!!! I guess I'm getting old, but for my needs, I can't imagine playing it without an attenuator.
I'm so glad I was able to find such a cool example of the Mazerati GT. It's gorgeous, and sounds good. It won't replace any of my Wreck clones, but it is a fun amp.
