Hi ! As I intend to get a EZG50 soon, I was just wondering if someone here did a A/B comparison with this amp and a vintage Pro reverb. From what I can hear, it is the closest cousin available.

well, i have owned a 69 pro reverb, with original speakers,, and i would have to say right off the bat that the z doesnt have the exact type of "sag" that my pro reverb had. it is tighter with more bottom. i dont miss it, but they are not the same. i am sure other pro reverbs might be different. i had heard that the ezg-50 had a 5u4gb rectifier in the beginning., but i dont know how the two(5ar4) would differ. i am pleased with the way this one sounds..

Thanks for that reply. But your pro reverb was a silver face, wasn't it ? so it might have sounded a little different than a blackface...

I have a 66 Super Reverb in mint condition - a lot of the same tones. However since my EZG was delivered the cover on the SR has stayed on more frequently than not! Comparison is a little apples to oranges since I play the EZG through 4x12 EVH III cab - lots of punch and more bottom.

I have a drip-edge pro which has blackface circuitry and I reckon the EZG sounds very different. The pro has a much softer attack at the start of the note, the EZG has better note definition, more bottom end but less sparkle. I think the pro is a more "forgiving amp" but the EZG can really inspire you to play well 'cause you can hear everything.

I've got a Super Reverb too. The EZG has a much smoother treble and a different midrange (more "Hiwatt"; not quite as scooped as a Fender). The bass on the EZG is *much* tighter and doesn't flub out at high volumes. The reverb on the EZG is more controllable. The pre and post volumes on the EZG are great. Even though I have the tremolo disconnected on the SR the EZG still has more harmonics and "swirl"; I think the output transformer has something to do with that. Needless to say I love my EZG!
