Hi, I'm new here and have enjoyed reading about Z amps a lot. I am in the proces of buying a Dr. Z amp and have the choice between a 2004 Mazerati and a 2006 Ghia. Both are in mint condition. Last night I used the Mazerati on a gig with my 6 piece soulband and I liked it a lot. It could have used some more highs though. I've put Mullard tubes in every position except for the 5751 which is the stock GE. I was wondering what the difference is with the Ghia. I don't have the possibility of trying the Ghia on a gig. Is the character/sound comparable? Will the Ghia break up much earlier? The Mazerati was loud enough and the volume was around 11:00. Get the amp to crunch would mean playing 'a bit too loud', according to the sound engineer. My guess is/was that the Mazerati is a higher volume version of the Ghia, but after searching this forum I came to the conclusion that that may be wrong. Anyone compare these two amps side by side? The Rati is thicker/louder/punchier/cleaner than the Ghia...the Ghia is a beautiful sounding amp, its modest 18 watt rating cuts through very well...in fact I feel like I can play the Mazerati loud in places where I would be told to turn the Ghia down...I know that doesnt make sense but I have experienced this firsthand.
