Hey guys- posted also on the 38 forum, but I haven't received a reply. Basically, I've got a new 38 Head that I love, but its got some minor hum and the reverb is nowhere to be found. It was shipped from Georgia to Colorado, so I'm thinking something may have been knocked around, or perhaps I have a bad tube(s) in general.
So I'll probably be ordering a new set of pre-amp tubes, but can anybody comment on which tube powers the reverb? The 12at7? It just seems to me that with these symptoms (esp. the reverb not working) the tube powering the reverb might be the culprit...
Thanks guys Ben in Colorado

V1 and V2 are tone stack and gain. V3 is reverb, V4 is reverb recovery, V5 is phase inverter.
When I received my brand new Maz38 in 2004 it made quite a racket when I plugged in to try it out. Ended up being the outputs to the reverb-tank had worked their way loose during shipping. Make sure they are all the way in. Rotating them a bit might get rid some hum, too.

When I had my Maz 38 head it had an annoying hum associated with the reverb. I was told from Dr Z that there would always be a slight hum that you couldn't get rid of because of the design. This is the reason I have recently ordered the combo instead of the head version. Here is the email I received when I asked about this issue.

If you get some mu metal from an electronics store and put it on the reverb tank the hum will vanish.
It is not easy stuff to get and not cheap but it works very well.

I know it has been a while since this thread started but I have a new Maz 38 head and have a lot of problems with crackling from the reverb.
I would be grateful if you would give a bit more info about how and where you fit the Mu metal to the tank etc. Do you order a sheet and cut it up? Any such info would be much appreciated.

Mu Metal is very pricy. I am not sure of current sources but I would think you could find it on the net via metal suppliers.
But .... Mu metal will not help crackle. That is a tube, socket or connection issue. Mu Metal will work with hum issues not crackle issues. Crackle is in the signal. Hum is RFI or magnetic interference.

Thanks for the quick response. I have issues with both hum and crackle.
How is the Mu metal actually fixed?

Crackling is from a bad connection, either RCA jack or V3, V4.

I have a JAZ head and the tank is one inch from the OT. I used to have a Silverface Dual Showman Reverb head also. I've never had any problem with hum from either one so I guess I've been lucky. Just for future reference, are you grounding the Mu Metal only through the tank?
