Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just recently played a Maj Sr 2X10 combo w/reverb. I liked it a lot. It's one of the most versatile amps I've ever played. Great AC30 tones and way beyond. BUT...... It was LOUD. Way louder than I thought it might be. Will the Jr. stay clean at gig/club levels, or is the Sr. the way to go? Has anyone used the Dr.z 4X10 with either of these amps as I am thinking about a head and 4X10 ext cab rig. Any thoughts? Thanks, J

I gig regularly with a Maz JR 2x10. The amp is surprisingly loud for 18 watts, and it stays relatively clean in a typical band situation at reasonable volume levels. But if things tend to get loud and you have to turn it up past a certain point, you'll begin to notice some hair/crunch. It's a great tone if the music you play works with that kind of tone. All that being said, if you're looking for pristine cleans that are loud with high headroom, the Jr probably won't cut it. For my situation, the Maz Jr is great for blues gigs, but it wasn't holding up well in a rock band that I play with, so I decided to get a Mazerati.

Although the MAZ Sr. & Jr. sound similar, the Sr. sounds like a larger amp. More low end, fullness & body. For $150.00 extra, you get allot more amp with the Sr. and it only weighs a few pounds more. I've used the Jr. in small indoor & outdoor cafe patios & clubs with great success at low volumes with a quiet drummer. However, I did an outdoor blues fest on a latge stage under a large tent, but the Jr. didn't hang as well. The drummer was loud and another guitar player using a cranked Blues DeVille forced me to dime the Jr. Although the high end was cutting through, the low-end got fairly muddy and the overall tone was very compressed. The PA was limited, so the only thing being miked was sax, vocals and keys going direct to the board. If there was a monitor mix and guitar amps in the mains, the Jr. may have cut it. I was r-e-a-l-l-y wishing I had the Sr. on that gig. I got rid of the Jr. shortly after and bought a Sr. ;D The Jr. does give up the goods quicker at low volumes, if you're looking for more power tube distortion. Personally, I like the pre-amp overdrive on the MAZ amps and get all the great gain I need without pushing the power section real hard and getting flatulent low-end. If you like the sound of the Sr. and you don't have access to a Jr., buy the Sr.. You've already heard it and know what to expect. Don't rely on other peoples ears to make such a crucial decision! A bird in the hand........

Thanks for the advice guys, I guess I'm just looking for a versatile el-84 based amp that I can cook the tubes in all the while not going deaf or having the front of house engineer hate me. Sounds like the Sr. is the one. THANK YOU

Don't forget that the Maz sr has a great master volume. You can turn in down to the 18 watt level and still have great tone but you can't turn the jr up to the 38 watt level. To me it's a no-brainer, do the 38 watt.

I just went back and played the Sr. again. It's settled, I'm buying a Sr. in the next couple of months. Thanks for all the help. I've learned a lot from this forum and plan to continue being here on a steady basis. I love learning about playing guitar as much as I love learning about the gear. THANK YOU! Jason

The Senior is simply more versatile and flexible than the Junior. I have never been happier with my sound.

Get an AirBrake with that Sr. and you'll get some good sound out of the tubes.

I agree, once I got my airbrake I fell in love with the dimed-out sounds on the Sr. I now rarely turn the volume and master below 3:00 at gigs.

Thanks That's a good thing. Someone giving valuable advice, going the extra mile, etc, click their exalt button and give 'em props for a job well done. Someone acts like an a**, or causes greif, give 'em a smite, takes away a point. Look at Myles and Dr Z, lots of points. Bluzsteel got 5 in one day for his pic sharing the stage with Buddy Guy!

Thanks Maybe it's becuase you haven't bought the Sr. Yet? :-) You're going to love it. Got mine a few months ago and I can't stop playing... I have to tear myself away. It has so many different moods. You can get lots of head room to get that nice smooth clean sound or you can crank the hell out of it to turn it into that nice Plexi sound. It loves pedals, so anything really sounds good in front of it. You're going to love it! (the post just automatically changed the word I wanted to use... Weird). Take care and good luck... Let us know when you get it!
