After reading how some of you have no problem balancing the output of ch 1 and 2, I went back to the local Z dealer and plugged into the Galaxie again. I'm a 6V6/6L6 guy, so I should love this amp, but I couldn't get the volume difference solved. Then it hit me . . . the tone controls work like they do on the Z28 (and probably most of the Doc's amps).
Instead of setting the treble and bass like I'd set a Fender, I backed them down to 0 and slowly dialed them up for each channel. I was getting outstanding tone from this amp at volumes that even my wife wouldn't mind! ;D I think I could easily manage my gig volume with this amp - no attenuator necessary, unless I wanted to drive the tone controls a bit harder in a smaller venue.
I might be a slow learner, but I finally get it, I'm thrilled, and I wanted to share the joy.

Galaxie will get ya lots of great tones on Channel 1 and Channel 2. and, as Ambassador T-Rock recently said, it is like learnin' to play an instrument. so many sounds just waitin' to happen. Glad to hear you're diggin' it. ;D cheers always, eh Joel

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm heading back into the store either tomorrow afternoon or Sunday to play through the Gal again. I figure one more trip should be enough for me to know for sure. I recently sold my Bogner Shiva, and I think the Galaxie might be a great replacement for that amp. Just have to decide between a head or a 2x10 combo . . . or just use the extension jack in the back of the combo if I need to move a little more air.
I'm pretty much hooked on the tone and simplicity of the Doc's amps, but as I found out, they are a different beast. You've got to take the time to figure them out. I think I could have a blast finding the different tones this amp has to offer.

Ches are you finding the Galaxie brighter than the Z-28?

I do find the Galaxie brighter, but it is about using the tone controls(besides your picking hand dynamics, guitar, tone controls on your guitar) Ches I have both Z-28 & Gal. TONE KNOBS WORK for these AMPS.
Cheers, Richard

Dave - I didn't spend a ton of time with the Gal, just enough to realize I wasn't using the tone controls properly in my previous attempts, and once I used them properly I liked the overall tone. I'll defer to Richard about the brightness, since he owns both amps. (What a great pair of amps, Richard!) I was playing a Les Paul through the Gal. When I go back, I'll try a couple G&L's to see how they sound.

Good Revelation. I'm enjoying the Gal 2x10 combo and surprised that I like the 2x10's over the 1x12. I did an A/B test with the Gal running through a 4x10 open back cab loaded w/Fender ceramic low powered speakers, same as the 4x10 devilles. The Dr Z 2x10 combo cab had more life (sparkle -n- hootspa) to it and the 2x10's worked better for me than my trusty 1x12 Weber 50 Alnico Blue Dog loud amp tamper cab. I was surprised at how much I love the Z 10's in the Dr Z Combo, it might be the lens technology? It sure helps that the amp is one righteous tone machine.
At first I only used Channel 1, it was a love fest and I never gave ch 2 a fair try. Then one evening I was sitting in for an ill player and only brought my BB w/battery then into the amp. It was a new battery and I didn't test it, it was an OOB failure. So I plugged straight in and used channel 2 as my stomp box. I find ch2 is a bit brighter than ch1 and yes it's all about the tone controls. Now a-days I'm running ch2 primarily and using the guitar volume control... that's it. Nice but every now and then the BB or Zendrive add nice compressed OD on top of the singing ch2 but I've little problem playing w/out a pedal, granted I'm play blues/rock/americana. That was hard to do with the Stangray. For my liking I'm running Treble noon, bass noon and Presence 1:00 ch1 volume noon channel 2 10:00 - 11:00.
