I went to my italian dealer's today, about 2 hours from home, to put the internal european adapter in the head (I used a step down transformer to convert 240v). So I had the possibility to try a Gal head with a Z-Best, even if I couldn't A/B it with the Route. Well, first impression of ch1 was excellent. Very Bassman - like dynamic range, I fell immediately in love with it, both with the Strat and the LP. Not the same for ch 2: I like very much the kind of distortion, the saturation (very fat) even if quite loud but I found it too trebly. Both keeping the same EQ of ch1 and lowering treb and presence while rising bass so I was quite disappointed by the EQ differences between the 2 ch. And ch 2 is very loud even with vol at 9:00. Is it possible? Was it a first impression and those high frequencies break up better in the mix?
On the 2nd half of october I will return to bring the Route and of course I'm giving it another chance, possibly comparing the 2 amps.

Tom,
The Galaxie is not for everyone. While I am love with all it has to offer, I do realize that it's tone just doesn't appeal to some. As far as being "too trebly", I just don't get that. Everyone's ears are different. As stated before, at 9:00, she's pretty much full up on channel 2. Try it at 10/12:00. The tone stack is amazing in this amp.
Every nudge of the three knobs gives you a different beast. I AM glad however, you got to try it w/a Zbest. Maybe new speakers were the culprit, unless the cab was your own. Just don't make the mistake of having it too close to ear level, and remember, store volume/tone does not = gig vol/tone.
I hope you change your mind....if not....at least you gave it a go....

Dr T, glad you got a chance to give the Galaxie a try. while I have not run thru a Z-best, I have run my 112 combo with a Z 210 extension and with a Z 112 extension ....am not sure about it being too trebly, however, the way I hear the Galaxie is a good top end and very solid bottom a while back I used it in a jam-band/house party situation and got to hear some other players using. I was really blown away with how well it was in the mix .... it was un-mic'd, against a small p.a. running vocals, keys, bass, acoustic guitar and some other instrumentation. I was 99.9 percent of the time using channel 2 ... vol @ 11:00 and both treble and bass @ 12:00 and presence @ 10:30. lemme know if you get another chance to test-drive and share some of the details if you are running pentode or triode, new cab or old, settings, etc ... I am admittedly a big fan of the Galaxie, but I'd like to know your thoughts. happy tone questing and cheers always, eh Joel

Thanks guys, well, don't mizundrstnd me, I really like this amp, expecially ch 1 but... before lettin' go 1500 Euro I got to be sure, as I'm a proud R66 owner and I won't buy easily another expensive amp (who could explain my girl?!?!?!) Playin' in large stages I never raised my R66 vol after 11, today I tried the Gal with vol1 at 11/12 and vol2 at 9:30/10, I think that they are about the same (stage) levels, as I was alone with my dealer closed in a "Z-heaven" downstairs in the shop. I'm asking these things to verify if that sensation could be only a first impression, and I will certainly give it another chance. Next time I will take a 2 hours trial, and compare the Gal to my Route, may be the high frequences are room wall's fault. Tony's clip are great, and I have great thoughts about this amp.

Thx Tom.........
The Gal w/LP/Strat/335//Tele is heaven for me. What you hear on all my clips is unadulterrated...that is....almost zero FX (sans a little reverb/delay from the board). If you don't like it...then you just don't like it(channel 2). No worries. Like I said, it's not for everyone, you have a 66, maybe the breakup you get w/that amp is just too different from the Galaxie for your taste.
FWIW...DrZ told me... Joe Walsh ( or most likely(my opinion here) Henley/Frye) said the Galaxie was too loud for the Eagle's stage....40 watts...go figure).
All that said....you gave 'er a go....that's all anyone could ask. This amp is TWEED in a large way. You said Bassman on the clean channel....I agree....But....it's Deluxe on steroids on the dirty side. NOT for everyone. Thx for the comment, and for giving her a shot man...... ;D

Sure, uh... I forgot something you'd better know I'm interested on this amp because I play everything from funk to classical and acoustics, but I AM also an Heavy Rocker! so a fat distortion IS a pleasure for my ears...

Looks like they really get you in the coolo in Italy for a Dr Z amp. That is very expensive. I feel very sorry for you Dr T

1450 to be honest, I know, but you must consider shipping charge (expensive for a fragile head with tubes) and importation taxes, for sure I'd like to go to Cleveland and buy a Z directly from Dr's hands but I can't...!!!

Sure, uh... I forgot something you'd better know I'm interested on this amp because I play everything from funk to classical and acoustics, but I AM also an Heavy Rocker! so a fat distortion IS a pleasure for my ears... just try an acoustic thru channel 2 ... it'll rock ya like nothin' else ;D seriously though, give it a second chance and do some dialin' of the tone controls. I may be crazy (okay, I am just plain crazy) but I think there are some tones and settings that'll make you a believer. that said, I am most certain that if ya already got a Rt 66 that you are prolly rockin' out large anyway! ;D cheers always, eh Joel p.s. just come to Z-fest 09 and bring your credit card wit ya!
