I read all these posts about getting nice break up with the volume around 12:00 on channel 2, and I can't figure out where you guys are playing to crank that amp that much!
I just tried a Galaxie today, and comfortable store volume is somewhere just above no volume. Are you guys using an attenuator? I definitely liked what I heard between channel 1 and 2, but daaaaang that sucker is loud!

Sounds like I'm getting more than I bargained for! I was planning on getting an Airbrake, though.......I guess the timeline for that has been moved up ;D Keith

Bear in mind..."store" volume does not equate to "gig" volume...The Galaxie is ONLY a 40 watt amp(pentode...30 in triode).....Yeah, it can get loud, but..........I have never found it to be overbearing. I use it "mostly" w/a Zbest w/greenbacks. I have used it with almost any combo of speeks that you can come up with (sans Gold's).
Clean channel at 12/1 o'clock....yep.......Dirty anywhere between 9 & 2.....STELLAR!!.....FWIW.....I do not use an attenuator, except when recording......JMO....etc.........

I keep saying the same thing about the Z-28. It's loud on it's own but in a band it sits so prefectly and keeps things from getting out of control.
Would have to think the Galaxy would be the same maybe slightly more.

No attenuators here. In fact, there was a gig when I was told (by my wife of all people) it was not loud enough and I was running the volume on channel 2 @ 12:00 and guitar volume @ almost all the way wide open ;D ;D Just a thought, try workin' yer guitar's volume control .... but then again, just crank it up and let 'er rip! ;D cheers always, eh Joel

I guess I'll head back into the dealer later this week and crank 'er up! Maybe my ears were working a bit too well today, or having the amp on a shelf that was about ear level might have made a difference.
I've gigged with my Bogner Shiva and had the volume up near halfway, so the Galaxie shouldn't be any different.

What speaker/s were you running into. The Galaxie isn't what I'd call a really loud amp compared with something like a Fender Super reverb or fender Blues Deville which requires a lot more to give up the goods. if you match the Galaxie with the Doc's recommendation of a single Celestion g1265 this will help you to keep the db at reasonable gigging small to medium club levels. If it's still too loud I'd recommend getting something with a master volume like a maz jr.

Just thought of something . . . Do you guys see much of a drop in output switching from pentode to triode?
George - It was a combo. Not sure if it was a 1x12 or 2x10. I think the problem might have been that it was sitting at ear level, and I had a wall right behind me. I'll check it out again later this week and give myself a little more room. I've gigged with a HR Deluxe and a Bogner Shiva, and neither was too loud, so the Galaxie should be a good fit. I think I just need to take another stab at it. Also, I have a MAZ 18, and while it sounds good, I'm more of a 6V6/6L6 kind of guy.
Thanks for the responses, guys. Ches

I'd check to see what speaker it had in it. I think you may have hit the nail on the head regarding the amp at ear level though. My buddy has a split level house with a sunken lounge room. His Fender Vibroverb is on the upper level and the other day when jamming over his place I thought my ear drums were going to rupture. I went to turn his amp down and noticed that it was only on 4. I also have a Z-28 and maybe if the galaxie is too loud then this would be a good choice instead. With a single greenie it's got some great tones available and the greenie does have a lower db rating than say a V30 or even a jensen so that might be a better choice for you. As far as volume differences between the pentode/triode settings I will have to go and check as I never play the Galaxie in triode but from memory I don't think it's substantial enough to make a difference.

Okay in the video we shot we weren't playing in a stadium, but a large outdoor venue. However running it on Triode mode I typically use an Airbrake on 1, 2, or 3 depending on the venue and how much we need to control stage volume. Ch 2 to my ears doesn't get much louder as you dial it up past 10 o'clock just more gain. I am using either Z 2x10 or Z 4x10 speakers with mine. In Triode mode if you don't want too much clean headroom it sits well with a real band with little or no attenuation.
Sometimes I angle my speaker cabinet up with a tiltback stand, I must admit when it is like that it can be a bit loud but really helps me control my stage volume.

I played with the Galaxie a couple nights ago at a smaller venue, with a minimal P.A. Even so, the Galaxie just blended in with the band so well. I got comments to the effect that my guitar sat perfectly in the mix and just sounded "right." Hard to quantify though...
But you are right; the Galaxie is LOUD. Anyone here suggesting it isn't loud, is deaf or plays venues so large that it doesn't matter. If you aren't able to play at loud volumes, you should get something with a master volume. The airbrake works, but sucks the life out of clean sounds. Only use it if you need a low volume dirty sound.

The speakers make a considerable difference. I had a 2x10 combo and always used the airbrake on 1 or 2 when playing in small venues with a band. We're not a quiet band and can get loud with dynamics but in general we are not that loud. That or I'm deaf! I now have a 1x12 combo and run either a weber 50 watt silver bell alnico or ceramic. Both of those speakers cut the volume down compared to the 2x10s or a gold. I now have the airbrake on 0 95% of the time.

I have the 2x10 w/the brake lite. Indoors I'll run the attenuator at 1, Ch1 at 1-2 oclock and Ch2 at 12-1 oclock. Outdoors I turn the brake lite off completely. When I play inside by myself I'll crank the brake lite to 4, which is just about perfect for a basement.
My biggest complaint with this amp - IT NEEDS VERB!!!! I'm actually considering selling it for a Category5.

If the Gal is too loud, the Doc has a mod where he replaces the presence with a master volume.

If the Gal is too loud, the Doc has a mod where he replaces the presence with a master volume. That might be good, but I would hate to lose my presence control.
