Last weekend I was in the Cleve, OH area to track a band called the Jack Fords and a pretty crazy fantastic old studio in Painesville called Suma Recording. Suma Recording is where Cleveland Recording moved in '77 after the University moved them out of their historic downtown location (where they recorded a lot of great music including Grand Funk, James Gang, Wild Cherry, The Outsiders....) Console was built in 72 by Ken Hamman and his son Paul who was the engineer on my sessions this weekend.
Suma has a great live room mostly 160 year old barn wood and stone. I had the drums in the middle of the room with a little bit of Go/Bo on each side. Guitars outside right and left and the hammond in the center across from the drums. (Bass was in one ISO room and the singer was in another) They had a pair of room mics mounted from the rafters. I had the guitar amps open in the room and was able to get the amps up and raging (one of which was a RT 66/Z Best) then use the Airbrakes to balance the volume L/R in the room. Throughout the session I changed the drive on the amps for various tones and continued to balance the volume in the room with the Airbrakes. I couldn't have had these amps out in the room open live on the track without the Airbrakes.

Airbrake is a wonderful tool when used appropriately. Sounds like the fit right in for your situation.

Thanks for posting the link Eric. I LOVE places like that. Every time I hear/watch/read/ about somebody like the Stones or Elton John posting up in a huge house and making a record, it warms me up Somewhere down the line I'd love to have a studio in a setting like that. A big room with lots of character..... Isolation be damned.

Glad you guys enjoyed my story. Call Suma Recording in Painesville and ask for Paul. As recording studios go the Suma is really not that expensive. PM me if you can't find their info.
