Good morning all!
I have a question: I have a wonderful RX Jr with a 12 inch Blue in her. I am struggling getting a little louder cleans from this baby.
I am starting to think that the Ray may have been the better choice. I love the tones, but even on the low input, with my LP's volume rolled back, I still seem to have some "hair" on her.
My thoughts are these: 1) figure out an extension cabinet to plug into (and how do I do this...?? never did it before) or 2) should I see about trading up in wattage?
I love the Voxy tones of this, and with a little verb, it seems I am in surf territory. love it.
Any suggestions??? Perhaps a more efficient speaker is in my future? I would only entertain 2x12 cabs...the Z best or the open backs.

When you say Blue, do you mean a Celestion Blue or a Weber? If it is the Celestion, you won't get a much more efficient speaker, so that's probably not an option. I hate to say it, but if you want pristine cleans at higher volumes, this amp may not be the best choice. Before you look elsewhere, here are a couple of things to try: - Turn the master all the way up and use the volume control to set the level - Start with the EQs all the way down and add what you need. - I've never done this on that amp, but you could try some lower gain pre-amp tubes in place of the 12ax7s (5751 or maybe a 12hb in the phase inverter position). - Make sure the overdose is off

Thanks!!
I do love this amp! I have the Celestions in it. I was just digging around this forum and may try the 5751's in V1 V3.
I guess my biggest issue is I like it LOUD and clean!!!
Sweet!! Maybe I will just need to wait and save for the EZG!

Yes, the EZG would probably be good or if you can wait for the KT45 to come back, that may be a good choice.

Loud and Clean...............I think you might need a Ray?
It will probably be my next choice.

You might get a bit more via a speaker swap - but only a couple db (the Blues are 100 db but you can get 103 db sensitivity speakers, so there is probably something you like that is at least a couple db more efficient). That might be enough or not. You can get another db or so by adding a second speaker, which is what I've done with my Maz Jr for the same reasons. So let's review - a couple db by going to perhaps a 103 db speaker, and another db or so by adding a second efficient speaker. Hey, that is looking like about 3 db or so - that's pretty considerable increase in volume considering you would need to go to a 30 watt amp to produce the same increase with the speaker you're using now.

I think the Tonker is 103 db.
I had one, they are ridiculously loud. But in a good way. In fact it is really the only Eminence speaker I really dug. I just prefer lower wattage speakers in the end. For me I'm really liking my 2x12 G12h closed back cab right now with my Ghia. Plenty loud and lots of clean headroom with just a hint of grit with my volume on 1 and the front end hit with my RC booster. I'm not gigging but i can honestly say that you will be able to play a decent sized club gig unmiked and sill have clean headroom with that setup.
Anyway, I'm off to bed guys and gals, like pop band, Matchbox 20 sing, it's 3am dadadada.....goodnight folks.
Dave Millsap (Bluzteel) loves his with his Rati. If he doesn't know what good tone is, then I don't know who does?

Be careful when comparing different manufacturer's ratings - 100db from Celestion could be different than 100db from Eminence. I have Texas Heat rated at 99db and I don't think it is any louder than my Greenback rated at 98db - in fact, it may be less.

It's a pity they can't all do it the same so we have real data with which to make purchasing decisions.

The tonker is a clean speaker and loud as sin, but I HATED the way it sounded with my Prescription. I do REALLY like the private jack though. It's loud and throaty...

Cool, thanks for that Billygoat.
I always wondered what the private Jack sounded like. I'm actually considering getting one. Does it sound anything like a Celestion G12 65?
I had a Tonker as well but had to sell it. It sounded great with my Ghia and Dave Millsap loves it with his Mazerati as well but I could see how the RXES might not bond with it compared with the darker Mazerati for example.

The Private Jack is supposed to be close to a Greenback.

The best way to open up a Rx Jr is a Z Best. I have a 1x12 Z Convertible but I tried it W/ a Z Best and it's the best for Head room and volume all the way around, but I can lift it w/ a bad back.

The private jack sounds alot like a greenback...Not exactly like a greenback but similar. (Like those perfumes..."Our version of" )
It has a nice throaty mid range and a smooth top to it, and a pretty tight bottom, but it breaks up sooner than say a governor. I like it ALOT. It even sounds good before it breaks in. But when it breaks in, watch out! I can get nice Jimi and Classic rock tones out of my RX with it
The tonker on the other hand was clangy and bright, like breaking glass with a tin hammer. It only lasted one gig with me, though it sounded great in my basement.
It's kind of weird, because in another el84 amp, the Vox ac15cc, I thought it sounded pretty good.
