Just trying to figure out if the RX Jr. is the right Z for me. I play a Strat and I will never use the amp at home (I gig 2-3 nights a week). I want a small, portable combo (no head/cab configurations). Most importantly, I want classic rock grind, enough that I will never need an OD pedal. I want the range from clean to dirty to come from the guitar volume knob. I don't always have the luxury of cranking the amp at the smaller clubs, so I think the master volume is a must.
I have previously owned a Route 66 and a Maz Sr. combo, but they couldn't do the heavier rock tones without a pedal. I don't want metal – just clear but ballsy crunch. If i had to describe the tone I'm looking for, it would be similar to an OCD pedal into a clean Maz with the gain on the pedal at about 12:00. And before you ask me why I just don't use a pedal, it's because I really want power amp grind at reasonable volumes. Pedals never sound as good.
Obviously my ears will be the final test, but I want to know if it's going to be worth the 2 hour drive to the nearest dealer.
Thanks!

The RxJr will do this, but in my opinion you will need to have the Over Dose on at all times and play with the volume and master volume levels along with the tone settings. Also an efficient speaker will help ...but like you said "your ears".
Most of my experience with the RxJr is with a Tele and LP.
Make sure your dealer has one, then take the drive.
(Master Volume is on the back next to the speaker jacks)

You can get pretty great saturation from the RX Jr. You can also run it pretty clean. With the built in OD switch you have a ready-made boost with gain. Sound clips can't really compare to a live test, but I've done a few with my RXJr. See - scroll down to the bottom for the higher gain stuff with my R8, but there's also a comparison of the RX Jr and Maz Jr both wide open there. That should give you a bit of a feeling as to whether a live test is warranted. www.gear.strayca.com/rxjr.htm

...heres what i have found....i'm a fender guy.... strats and teles....i can get a very satisfying grind/crunch using the MV but going from clean to that crunch with just a guitar volume knob probably ain't gonna happen without a serious change in volume....that said...i've had a Maz Jr and a Maz Sr (and a 66, 3 Ghias and 2 Z-28's).....for the record i had an OCD with my Maz JR and i know the tone you are talking about.. actually the Ghia sounds like the amp you're looking for to me as it will do the clean to crunch thing without dropping a lot of volume when you back off on the guitars' volume knob....the cleans are good but not that big.....the crunch is as good as it gets to my ears...you don't get as much tweakability as the Rx Jr provides but you do get an amazing amount of flexibility considering theres only two flippin knobs...the Rx Jr is just right for my tastes because i like the big cleans to go with the good grind and i like it in the 15-20 watt range with some tone shaping capability...the MV is better than any i've had to date....IMO its a great amp to take out without pedals....

...got to spend some time out in the studio yesterday and i did get a setting on the Rx Jr that allowed me to go from fairly clean to pretty gritty with the volume knob on my tele....had the volume not quite dimed and the master around 10 o'clock....OD on and eq pretty much straight up....worked pretty darned well...it wasn't squeaky clean but it was clean enough and it wasn't anemic sounding....and the crunch was definitely right there...that was through a Z old style 1-12 loaded with a 50 watt ceramic Silver Bell...the more i play this amp the more i dig it....it definitely makes you wonder what all your pedals are good for...

Hi, another amp would be the Mazerati GT. Clean, crunch and fat lead sound can be controlled with the the volume knob of the guitar. Sorry, you want a combo. I think the GT is only available as a head. You get a fat sound even with a Strat.

The RXJr is a killer Blues Rock /Classic rock amp IMO and loves 'Buckers.
That said, if your not in a hurry and can hang loose 'till after the first of the year, the 4x6V6 Proto amp (yet unnamed) will set you free ;^)

...I use the RxJr. with OCD/gain @ 7:30 (light) and a Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe Tele and get just a tiny bit of hair on the end of the notes...oh soooo very sweet dude!
