Just looking for a head count on what your favorite speaker might be with the RX Jr? I started off with an 8ohm G12H30 that has always been my favorite in nearly every situation, but ended up preferring an old Greenback of the two. If you select other, please list what it is in the thread.

Celestion Alnico Blue does the trick here. I like the Gold too, but you don't need that much power handling in a 1x12 combo. The Blue is just perfect.

I can't wait to try it with a Blue, maybe this weekend.

I've been thinking "blue." I'm wondering, though, if I'm running Jr wide open if the blue might be underrated? I know both the amp and speaker are rated at 15 watts. Doesn't Doc rate his amps on the conservative side? I'd be worried that running the amp wide open a lot might blow the speaker. I love the sound of the "blue" in other amps (Vox AC15HH in particular). Am I being overly concerned?

The Alnico Blue is rated at 15 watts. The Doc sells the Maz Jr pre loaded with a single Alnico Blue even though the Maz Jr is an 18 watt amp. I've been here a couple years and I've never seen anyone say they had blown a blue with a Maz Jr. From that I take it that the 15 watt RX Jr should work fine and last a long time.

I asked Doc at Z fest if the blue was OK for a RXJR. He said it depends on how you play. You could blow up a EV with a RXJR.

(Plus I don't have a 1x12 Blue anyways). I need the headroom and volume with the RxJr. For quieter gigs I use the Silver Bell AlNiCo

I voted for the Blue. I have a G12H, but the Blue is what I'll get next. I'll probably wait a while for the sake of not having any money, but I'm guessing I like the chime.

I tried my Jr with a Blue, Gold and Fane tonight and ended right back with the Greenback. Even with the bass and mids dimed and the treble rolled back to 2 all 3 of the speakers were far too bright for my taste.

jumpmarine,
Were those brandy-new speakers? Or were they some good broken in ones? If they were new, even traditionally dark sounding speakers could sound overly bright. Then again, I'm pretty fond of the greenbacks also.

My Blue is Brand Spankin New. Then again, dog whistles make me uncomfortable....haha
Its bright, I would like to try some other speakers, but since its a combo, not gonna happen anytime soon. I know in my future I am going to get either a Z28 or EZG 50 for the fenderish cleans, so at that time, I will go for the head/cabinet config and play around.

One more thing, I would like to hear a Greenback. I was deciding between my RX and a Stang Ray. The Stang i demo's had a cab with 2 12 greenbacks. Man was that THROATY. Loved it, just too much power for my needs. I would be deaf by December.

I've tried many celestions, scumback, and Webers, and I prefer the webers.

It looks like the Blue is the favored speaker. It seems that I'm not hearing the magic of the blue. What guitars/pickups/fx are you all primarily using in your signal chain? I'm starting to wonder if it's my Strat rather than the amp/speaker combo.

Nahhhh, we all hear things differently. There are a lot of Vin-30 fans out there; I don't hear the magic in that speaker. Each to their own.

I noticed where the DR recommends the Greenback... I have a 10"/12" speaker cab, & I just ordered a pair of Scumbacks for it a 12" M-75 25w 10" SA 10 M-75 30w... they both have the same sensitivity rating... from what I've read about the RX Jr it has plenty-0-bass response & is plenty bright... maybe thats why the DR likes the greenback, to give it a well defined "midrange"...

I was surprised by the lack of low end tightness that the blue/jr combo gives me. At high volumes it is a little flabby unless you are really carefull with your pic attack, I was hoping for a Roy Nichols sound but not with the Blue. I was wondering about trying the cabinet with the tens in it. I am also going to try opening the cabinet up and see what that does. Enjoy your amp!

i got to tell ya, i have a 62 nash strat that, when i use it on the neck pup, i have the bass all the way off (celestion gold spkr), and with the master on the back up only half way, it has all the big tone that it does with the master all the way up,, i know it sounds crazy, but this is a perfect amp if you need "less is more" sort of, i dont know how to describe it, it took me quite a while to find the desirable sweet spot, seems like it has plenty of midrange with this spkr. use it in the high input then use the boost switch . i think the gold is a bit too much for this amp,, i am wondering if i would get more clarity out of a 15 watt weber alnico.. this is a very versatile amp, marshally, really. for some reason i cant stop going to this amp. somewhere in the neighborhood of a ghia and a maz jr, but it has the hi fidelity of the ef86 tube. i just keep finding good tones out of it.. highly recommended..

I had to turn the bass almost all of the way down with the G12H30 as well to make sure it didn't get flabby when pushed. I just swapped out again for my 16ohm Greenback and I like it much more than the G12H30.

I didn't like my Blue closed up but it was a different animal open and I love it! Try it--you'll like it! (maybe)

I just swapped out my 16ohm Greenback for an 8ohm in my 1x12 and holy cow, what a difference the proper ohm load makes. Tighter lows, smoother gain and better chime. Man, I love this amp! Can't wait for the speaker really break in.
