What a great tone this amp has, its just a joy to play. The pre and post controls aren't exactly what I would think of as a master and pre... it seems to function a little different. Even with the pre dialed and the post almost off there is not a lot of gain with a strat. If I want gain I need the post also kind of hot. I get gain this way, but its pretty loud. Today I used a boost on the front and it got more gain. Tomorrow I'll try the Airbrake, but how are you guys getting gain from the EZG-50?

the short answer is... i'm not. my experience with the EZG is exactly like yours. with the pre-amp maxed and the post at useable levels there is no gain at all. the cleans definitely fatten up with the pre-amp maxed, but no gain. personally, i am quite happy about this.
i am so happy with the cleans that i have not hooked up a pedal or the airbrake. i think that an OD pedal will be the ticket as opposed to the airbrake for gain. the question is, which OD pedal? so far, my favorite OD is the Zen Drive followed by the OCD, so i'm hoping that one or both of these will be a good match with the EZG. my guess is that the Zen will work better than the OCD.
besides the air brake, which ODs will you be trying with the EZG? keep us posted.

I'm using an OCD with the EZG-50 and it kills! I find the EZG-50 seems to love my overdrive pedals. It's the best blackface style amp I have ever played!

I have just started to try pedals. Tonight I tried one pedal, the Xotic AC Booster. It compress more than some other pedals but it did give a nice overdrive sound. I will be trying the Keeley blues driver, COT 50, Eternity, King of Tone, and Klon Centaur, and OCD 3rd version. I have others but this is the start. Like I mentioned the EZG-50 has the clean tone thang down... I like it better for me than the Stang Ray, but I do need overdrive tones in my arsenal and I'm looking for the best way to get there..... lools like pedals for now baby!!!

I really prefered my Eternity over the AC Booster for what its worth. I have the Roadhouse version. I have OCD v. 4. I am not sure how its different from ver. 3, but it sounded great with both the Strat and the lespaul. I hated the OCD when it first came out but the 4th version really impressed me.

Anyone try the Jetter GSR with the EZG? I've had the Zen next to the GSR and thought the GSR smoked it by quite a margin. The Zen struck me as gritty, grainy, lower gain version of a TS9. Didn't like it at all. The GSR was smooth, fat and chewy...basically RF Dumble tone in a box with the right amp, which brings me to the EZG. Based on what you guys are saying about the EZG gain structure, I am guessing it would be totally amazing with the GSR.

I tried the Ulbrick 12axe pedal today and it worked great. I put the amp on a great clean sound at the volume I wanted and set up the 12axe to go into the bluesy and somewhat overdriven tones. To get more gain I bumped the 12AXE with a 19Sixty3 pedal. This was a very good combination, and I did leave my guitar on about 8 so I could kick my gain up higher just using the guitar. I have a Zen Drive II, and a Jetter GSR coming in the mail and I give that a shot in about a week. Just for reference my EZG is set up as follows, on the clock. pre-3 post 10 treble 12:30 mid- 11 bass-8 reverb dwell- 10 reverb mix-10
This is into my (2) 2x10 Z Cabs y cabled into the 4 ohm jack>

Kind of a nubie here. I love the tone with pre and post maxed out so much better than any of my pedals, but have a fear of the negibors calling the cops on me. Do you guys think I'd be better off with an air break?

I like it that way too, but there is no place I play where I could open it up like that. In your case, if you don't want a pedal, I'd say Airbrake for SURE.

I tried the KOT last night, and liked the normal channel but the more compressed one sounded to nasel. I also tried the Gristle King, and the overdrive channed was really congested, I know some players get great sounds out of that pedal but not me. I still think there is nothing quite like a good amp opened up, but with the EZG I need a pedal. Tonight or tomorrow I may try the Airbrake.

My Zendrive II came in, its the one with the tube. So far I like it with the EZG, you really can get that Dumble kind of sound. I used it with a 58 Historic LP with Lollar pickups. Set the amp for nice clean tone, then used the Zendrive at just a little above unity gain. Anyway really nice with this amp. I had a Zendrive about a year ago and sold it, but this one works great, and its very quiet.

Related topic - Has anyone tried Evan with some Fralin blues specials? I'm thinking about picking up a set for an AM Strat.
One a side note I love my keeley moded TS9 w/ my 71 epiphone sheraton. Stock 2000 Strat is just ok which is why I'm kind of looking.

crowland, that's what I have in one of my strats, except it has the sp43 bridge pickup. It sounds great, Fralins are one of the great pickups.
