I asked this over in the Stangray section but I will ask it here as well. How close does the RXjr come to getting the clean tones of the Stangray? Volume aside, do they sound close to the same? I want an amp to use along with my Ghia to cover the clean tones. I would switch between them, one for dirt (Ghia) and one for clean (RXjr). I like clean tones that are on the edge of starting to grow hair. The Ray can be pretty loud from what I've read when it starts to get a little hair so I thought the RXjr with the MV might be the ticket. What do you guys think that have them?

man the jr has a huge clean tone, i think. i played recently in a fairly large banquet room in kansas city with the jr on about 9 oclock on the master and really the volume on about 9 oclock too, but i used the boost switch and used my volume knob on the guitar. it really filled the room. i was only playin with a keyboards and an acoustic guitar player. it worked perfectly. i was using a z 2/10 cab. and i had a lot of headroom to spare. the reason i got the jr and let go my ghia (the 4th one i owned) was i wanted a bit more versatility, and the jr does give that. some people would say "why dont you use a pedal to get zz top at low volume" but you would just have to have a jr in front of you with the right speaker to get the versatilty of this amp. i used to own the flagship, as they say of the z line, the maz 38 senior, and you could get a pretty good low volume crunch by using the tone controls and the master on that amp, but there is something going on with the ef86 tube and the 2 little ol el84s that the maz junior doesnt have. i have two matched and balanced jj 12ax7s in mine and i can really tell the difference in the stock type 12ax7s it has. the sustain is over the top and the smoothness is there. i cant say enough about the clean tones of the rx jr,, sadly i have never played a stangray, BUT, it costs quite a bit more to retube a stangray,, the reason i wanted a 2 el84 amp,,, the only amp i might ever trade my jr for would probably be a stangray though..

There is PLENTY of clean headroom in the RxJr. It can easily get close to what a SR does in my opinion, but not as loud. It can go places where a SR can't go. It also has a punch thing going on.
I think pairing it with the CG will do what you are describing and in a very nice way.
Another thing... you may be able to accomplish both with the RxJr by using the Over Dose.

I haven't played a SR, but man I love the cleans on the Rx Jr. That's what sold me on the amp. You can always get overdrive with pedals, but a clean sound can't be faked. Then it does the slight hair overdrive thing as well just by working the master and pre. Then the added bonus of the overdose boost. Kick that sucker on and you've got a bit more gain and saturation. I don't think you can go wrong with the Jr.

OK With a user name like mine, I should not be posting sound clips However, I was trying out my new Zoom H2 recorder using the Rx Jr and my Tele...and I had a little clip of what the 'cleans' are like, so why not post it. I popped 'Mud on the Tires' in the car CD player yesterday on the way to work and when I heard this little intro on one of the tunes, I just had to try it when I got home! www.supload.com/sound_confirm.php?get=871636631.wavFor what its worth, this is the Jr with 212 Blues, gain on 8, no overdose and master on about 2. This gives a little indication of the 'cleans with hair', especially if you dig in. Keith

well I got a Ghia and a ES JR to go side by side to have a lower powered version of my Ray and ES that I have. I was thinkin that the Ghia would give me a more "raw" tone......as I like to call it.....that my Ray has
