I've been tube swappin' all day, and the clean tone I found I like the best is when I swapped out the 12ax7 preamp out for a 12at7... The volume doesn't get any hair on it now until about 2:00 (11:00 before), but the cleans are more...... clean - for lack of better words. A little more responsive and it seemed to take a little bit of mids out of it, and give it some chime. I'm not sure I'll keep it this way, but I'm going to try it at practice tomorrow night.
I tried swapping out the phase inverter with several different type of tubes, but I couldn't really tell a difference so I left the 5751 tube in there.
Just thought I'd post my findings.

I liked it when I used the 12at7 in my ex-Mazerati. Gosh, that was a cool amp!

This is the V1 position?

I've never liked an AT7 in ANYTHING... to thin & brittle. Much preferred the 5751.
AT7's are good for reverb drivers & phase inverters, but not so great for tone-producing positions (V1) IMHO. If the AT7 sounds good in the Rati, it makes me think it's a pretty dark-sounding amp/speaker?

Old RCA and mullards sound really good no matter where you use them!

I've got some NOS GE/Phillips 12AT7s, and I think I even have 1 Mullard... NONE of them sound as good as a AX7, 5751, AU7...to me. Not in a tone-making position (V1).
But hey- as we all know, tone is subjective!
