I know this sounds crazy... but if I were to want a little less gain...
Has anyone tried putting a 5751, 12AT7, 12Ay7 or a 12Au7 in your mini Z to reduce gain?
Thanks

Just got a 12AU7 yesterday and it is like putting my Z-Brake on Bedroom setting and maxing out the second knob to the lowest volume except no tone loss. Don't get me wrong the Z-Brake does not mess with the tone until you use BR setting. The mini starts to break up with this tube around 3:00 vs 9:00. I really like this now I can take it on the road, use at home without being told to "Turn it down Dad" still won't fix " Do you know any songs from this century?" Great tube though.

Just got my Mini and tried different tubes. Original was a GT/EL 84 *5 rating and a JJ EC 83 S. The amp was very gainy out of the box - almost too much for me. I changed the tubes and tried different configurations. For now I use a EH/EL 84 and a NOS GE 5751. The sound gets gainy around 3:00 and I can clean up better than before. But it´s no clean amp. Crunchy and gainy sounds are what this amp is made for. I like those sounds. I own a Mazerati GT too. The GT has way more bottom and a fatter overall sound and cleans up very well. As I mentioned - very different amps - just my opinion.

Does installing a lower gain pre-amp tube sound different from turning down the volume at the guitar?

I don't have a Mini but with most of my amps I prefer 12AY7s. About 2/3rds the gain of a 5751.

Myles has answered this question in depth lots of times here in the past. Check out his comments here, in the tubes and experts sections. Lots of good reading there.

I found the original to breakup really early and 3 o'clock was as much gain as I needed. An ECC81 makes the amp break up at noon instead of 9 o'clock. I find this tube makes the amp much more adjustable. it does not give more headroom though.

I don't have a Mini but with most of my amps I prefer 12AY7s. About 2/3rds the gain of a 5751. What you are doing here from my viewpoint is the best solution. An AY7 is an awful tone generator as is an AT7 ... AU7's are best for phase inverters or current drivers. The AY7 is a great tone generator ... tweed bassman as an example.

Just to report back in... I played with a 12AY7 for a bit. I like it a lot. A few days later... just for the heck of it I put in a NOS JAN GE 5751... and it is staying.
I have been playing through a Hellatone 30 in an open back cabinet. But I may try a V30 or a GB12 to stiffin it up a bit more.

I swapped out the JJ 12ax7 for a NOS 12ay7 GE JAN... what a difference. It's got a more useable sound for my tastes... all the way to 3 o'clock...
