I have a two year old Ghia that sounds great! But last night after about two hours of practicing, my ghia started screeching very loudly and no matter what I did it wouldn't stop except turning it off of course. What causes screeching, maybe preamp tubes? Any input would be nice.
Thanks,
Clint

Tubes are definitely suspect here I'd say. I'd try replacing the output tubes first, as they're more likely to fail than the preamp tubes... Still, when output tubes fail, most of the time they just quit. If the amp still squeels after you replace the power tubes with a matched pair, it could be a microphonic preamp tube as well, so swap V1 with a known good tube. If all else fails, e-mail the doc.

Your Ghia is dead...I'm sorry to hear it.. Please put it in a box/packed well and send it to me; I'll dispose of it. Use another amp from now on bob

Ha Ha, don't you wish, I think the Ghia is immortal it just needs some healing. It did sound like it was possessed with demons or something last night!

yeah...almost definitely a tube issue.....you can also check the tubes by gently tapping on them with the eraser end of a pencil while the amp is on.....the bad ones will give a bit of a crackle....but i guess in your case if the amp is howling, it might be hard to hear that cracke........when i first got into tube amps, a similar thing happened to me at a gig.....it wasnt fun......my amp was still playable, but it had this hum the whole time that got louder as the night went on....luckily the audience also got drunker

Just to let you guys know! I took my Ghia to a local guy who builds his own amps and he said the problem was some solder joints had come undone. Whew, I'm glad it wasn't something expensive!

Solder joints coming undone? Did you buy the amp used? Maybe somebody had been in there in the past fooling around or something.

sorry but sounds like the first preamp tube, but i'd also suggest tapping the tubes or replacing one by one the solder joints thing sounds like complete crap- have you ever looked inside your amp- every solder joint has been tested and daubed with some red shiny paint- never seen such good soldering best of luck as the carmen ghia is a truly bullet proof amp

I bought it from the Gear Page. I thought for sure it was a tube issue myself. The tech wrote down that it was a solder joint between a cap and a resistor, I think.
Anyway, I guess I will open it up myself and see. It sounds great now though. I played it several times this weekend.
