Is this the Dr. Z amp that will command twin Alnico Golds in an open-back?
Alvin Lee, or SRV? ;-)

Hmmm. If I had money on the EZG-50 right now, I'd be looking for a flatter speaker for it - maybe Tone Tubbys or the Weber Alnico California. That is assuming it has all that blackface goodness we're expecting. I will say though - we plugged a blackface bassman into my 2x12 with Golds last year at PNW Z-Fest and holy mother! Wide open, that thing sounded just amazing. So I think YMMV depending on what kind of tones you're looking for.

A pair of Golds would be fantastic.

i sent Ted Weber an email asking about a good speaker match for the new EZG-50. here is his response...
"I would use a 50 watt 12F150, lightly doped. Or, for a little more headroom and later breakup, I'd use the ceramic Chicago 12."

Well I was, but they sounded pretty good. I don't really like the sound of the Golds, but they work well with this amp.

I recall from my youth that some black faces had EV SRO 12s, which is where I first discovered that speaker's goodness. So clean, so smooth, so loud.

This amp sounded sweet through the 4 10 Z cab!

I thought it sounded great with two golds in an open back cab. I actually liked it a little better than through the 4 10. It gave it a little more round sound. I liked the 4 10s also, it sounded great through both. I'd like to know what one would sound like through a 2 10 cab. I am starting to think more in terms of portability these days.
