I've spent the afternoon using the EZG-50 through my old '68 Fender Dual Showman cabinet. This amp sounds phenomenal through it. I A/B'd with the Z 2x10, and the big old speaker cabinet w/2 15's definitely wins. It's nice to breathe some life back into it. I bought the Dual Showman new in 1968, and lugged it around for quite a few years, until it was relegated the cabinet to the garage for about the last 30. I sold the head back around 1970 and had replaced it with a Marshall 50W head for about 4 years. When Fender came out with the Quad Reverb, I bought that, sold the Marshall head and retired the cabinet. MeZadude One question is there anything left on the opposing wall? ? The 4X10 has an unruly amount of base. . . but 2 X 15.

Although, I'm now having tube problems. One of the power tubes is pulsing and making a lot of crackling and popping noises, so I've had to stop using the amp for now. Arrgghhh. MeZa

That's the reason I asked the question... when I talked to Doc at Z-Fest he said that he was using both Winged "C"s and GT 6L6's...mine's came with the Winged "C"s. ;D

i wonder if there is a noticable tonal differnce between the Winged C and GT 6L6GE? i have some NOS 6L6GC tubes (RCA and GE), but i am not so sure that i will use them in this amp. while the NOS tubes can sound better than new production, i am learning that some of the new production tubes sound just great, and these GT 6L6GE tubes sound pretty good to me.

OK OK....
First let me say I'm sorry to hear about MeZa's tube problem. We have PM and determined it's a bad Winged C and I'll be sending him a new set next week.
Yes I initially wanted all EZG amps to be shipped with GT 6L6 GE tubes, BUT Groove Tube can't supply them. Maybe Myles will step in, but they ran out and there next batch has been delayed now over a month. I have 50 pairs on Back -Order. Maybe it was the Fender deal that took priority to ordering replacement stock, maybe the need not to spend/order stock that will be turned over in the sale, no one knows for sure.
But I wasn't going to postpone the release of the EZG any longer do to a suppliers F up. You guys should try and walk in my shoes for a while and see the stuff that suppliers try to get away with, and adjustments you have to make, mostly to much larger companies then myself.
I ordered every new production 6L6 available , then had a shoot out. Just like speakers I test tubes with three sonic levels.
Clean tones. Moderate Crunch tones. Over the top Distorted tones.
No speaker or tube is PERFECT for all three settings, so I use the one with the least compromises. One that is at least a 2 3/4 out of 3.
The Winged C was hands down the best sub, and did the Overdrive tones better then the 6L6 GE. The 6L6 GE still had a slightly better clean swirl around the note, but only SLIGHTLY, and the Crunch tones were identical and the Winged C was smoother under harder drive.
The Winged C is 50% higher in cost per pair to me, and since GT doesn't sell them they aren't as well matched or burned in.
The Winged C is a copy of the Sylvania 6L6 STR, and of course the 6L6 GE is a dead nuts copy of the GE clear top 6L6. Both in there original state were used by Fender , GE on earlier Blackfaces and Sylvania on newer Silverfaces.
I hope to be able to buy the 6L6 GE again, but at this point I'm not sure. The Winged C is very available but the price has increased with each order I put in.
In the future I will be a more selective on info I divulge to this forum, because like you I don't cherish having to explain every decision I'm forced to make.

Hey Doc - I worked for one of the largest manufacturers in the U.S. for 28 years and I completely understand what it is like to be at the mercy of suppliers! You have my sympathy. I have a EZG 50 on order and was wondering if it did come in with the Winged C would there be any issues if I replaced it with NOS 6L6s? Would it just be plug and play or would I have to do something to it?
Thanks in advance -
Mike

Thanks to the good Dr. for helping me out here. Great service! For now, I put a matched pair of JJ 6L6's which I had purchased just last month (for my Fender Quad Reverb) in the EZG. They sound fine. I can't tell the difference between the originals and these, and the best part is that the amp is working again. Didn't mean to cause any trouble here either! MeZa

I've gat apair of JJs in a non Z amp and they sound great. Back when I used a Dual Showman Reverb set I wouldn't put the head on top of the cab or my tubes would go microphonic. If I was going to do that now I'd use a piece of foam between the head and the cab. Those big 2x15 cabs must really vibrate.

I didn't mean to start any trouble either! I was just curious about the output tubes. My EZG came with the Winged "C"s and I haven't felt the need to change them out it sounds so da*n good! The highs are nice and round and clear, the mids are smooth, the bass is, well, like a SVT and it's punchy as a prize fighter. I've got a new set of GT 6L6GE's in my collection but that's where they're gonna stay while I'm happily playing my Evan (and I get my 4x10 this week!!!!!)

Again no problem Phil. I must be more selective with data I present here, because like this situation I have no control over my suppliers.
Things I state about my new designs are cast in stone some what, and no other builder states the type of tube used in a design and why. And when that tube becomes unavailable, do I stop production or do I find a sub ?
Then if I use a sub the "TUBE POLICE" pull me over, I say this in a joking manner now, but I still feel the need to explain my actions, caused by supply.

Especially in a 35MPH zone in Maple Heights.... ;D What happens at Z-Fest, stays at Z-Fest... *inside joke between me & Dr. Z- however one Z-Fest member did get a speeding ticket on the way to Saturday's event....although he did get there in time for the group photo LOL!

I do the tube orders where I work, and I can attest to the Winged C's going up substantially!! That being said, I prefer the Winged C over the 6L6GE overall. The GE does seem to have a wee tad more of that swirly magic that the old great ones had. But the Winged C sounds better in just about every other category. And it's a sturdier tube. Harold

i think i may have put some fuel on the fire, so i too apologize. i didn't intend to contribute to an uncomfortable situation, and i fully understand the Doc's frustrations with vendors and suppliers. i am not in the music business, but i have daily issues with the suppliers, vendors, and so-called "partners" with whom i work. this is a monster of an amp and will sound great with the GT or Winged C tubes.
i think one of the reaons that we love the Doc so much is beacause he always does the right thing. there is no need for him to provide such a detailed explanation of what happened with the tubes, but he did anyway. he is truly a Man of the People!!!

MeZa Those power tubes are real Svetlanas ... not the Sovtek ones but the real ones out of St. Petersburg. They are a very accurate copy of a sixties era Sylvania STR387 which is a great tube. Back in that era Fender used the Sylvania STR387 and the GE 6L6. Both are pretty terrific tubes.

The GE does seem to have a wee tad more of that swirly magic that the old great ones had. But the Winged C sounds better in just about every other category. And it's a sturdier tube. Harold Harold, I have two clients that play together in a group and each has a BF Fender Pro Reverb. One of the amps has GEs and the other Svets. I have lost track of how many times I have switched them back and forth in these amps as one guy always thinks the other guys amp sounds better so it is an ongoing situation. For those of you in L.A. that know some of the session folks .... Ed Atkinson and Jeff Smith are the two guys ... so talk to either one of them for a take on a 50 watt BF amp with these two different output tubes. Both of their amps have been blueprinted and the front ends on each amp match as do the voltages and most other factors, even resistors are design spec values rather the the +/- 20% Fender allowance. So ... the deal here is the output tubes and you can keep going back and forth forever as they are both very nice.

Just for the record, when I bought this amp I assumed that it came equiped with the GT tubes. I played the amp and loved the tones... later I checked the back of the amps to find it was the Winged C tubes. Sounds great to me... no reason to change. The only thing I might try sometime is to put in one of my sets or RCA blackpate 6L6GC pairs. I have about 12 pairs of these that I have collected in the past 6 years.

Hey guys. I used the EZG paired with the Showman cabinet in the studio at rehearsal last night. Once I cranked it up, I remembered WHY I retired the cabinet years ago. It's got a thin sound and was pretty bright. About the only type tunes I liked it on were the old Motown-style ones. Other than that, I wished I had brought one of the smaller cabinets, like the 2x10, or the single 12. So, I don't think I'll be using this cab live. It does sound nice in my living room though. MeZa
