I've been kicking around the idea of moving from my Maz 38 Sr to a lower powered setup, and the Rx Jr is on my short list.
I'm thinking, in theory at least, that I'd get a lot of flexibility if I'd have one cab with a nice alnico in it for most applications, and another cab loaded with a very efficient Emi Tonker that I'd use for situations where I'd need a little more volume and headroom. I have a Tonker here that I used in a Mazerati I used to have. Good sounding speaker but LOUD.
Anyone tried an Rx Jr with a Tonker yet? I wonder how it would sound.

Bet it would sound really great. I've yet to hook either of my Prescription amps to any speaker and have it sound bad. That amp just loves everything. Part of it is that it has such a wide frequency response that you can dial in a speaker that might be weak in the bottom or the top. But the rest is the amp just sounds really cool through anything.

I played a tonker for the first time yesterday and I still cant understand what any one is saying WHAT?Are they incredibly loud or what? I popped one in my old Mazerati and played a gig that night where the soundman told me my amp was as loud as some Boogie Rectumfrier thing that a guy had there the week before me. Did you try it with an Rx JR by any chance?

A Tonker with a Mini Z will play any stadium gig anywhere.
Tonker = the loudest speaker on the planet.

I had a Maz 38 and I too thought it was too loud for the small venues I play (4-100) folks.. I now have a Rx Jr and it gives up the goods at a lower volume...I love this amp...Now I'm gonna try a different Spkr too!

Well it just so happens, I had already ordered one when I first read this thread and just got it, an 8ohm Tonker... to try with my RX JS and Maz Jr... Been wanting to try one for a long time but just never got around to it... I put it in my old style Z-cab acquired through OMS company ( thanks Curt, I love me some black n wheat) and I've heard this speaker and even played through one somewhere one time in some odd amp, but I've never HAD one, and since I've had my Z's, and been trying out every speaker with them know to mankind, to just try out... and after hearing John Zocco playing his Mazerati ROARING though about 3 Eminence speakers at a show, I thought it was time to give this speaker a real whirl... Well, STEVE you need to grab one o these like you said you wanted to in another thread to try out, now... It won't replace any of my favorites, but I was extremely impressed Playing this speaker and it turned both the RX JS and the MAZ JR into a 1x12 fire breathing BEAST!!! I swear in a 1x12 cab it'd give the Z-best a run for the money... and I might be crazy but it reminded me of a ceramic version of the Celestion Gold??!! I know it' sounds crazy but it was that in your face kinda thang/ feeling playing it with a little different/ ceramic top end... not bad at all, Nice sound. LOUD.Now I'm thinking I might always have a tonker around in a 1x12 cab just in case I need to blow it out, great for the lower wattage amps like the RX JS to get a little more outta them... RX JS and a Tonker is really loud and gets nasty. So with a Gold or a Tonker you could really get the most outta the RX JS... Hmmmm a Gold AND a Tonker... Bentop's next mission if he chooses to accept it.

I might do that. The thing is, if you have a typical 97 db sensitivity speaker in your RX Jr, and you put one of these in there (102 db sensitivity), that's like going from 15 watts to almost 60 watts. YIKES! No wonder everyone thinks this speaker is loud - IT IS! Imagine what happens when you start out with 50 watts... holy moley! I gotta look up the formula for db's again so I can get the exact numbers right, but when you plop a speaker that has 102 db sensitivity in your amp where you formerly had a 96 db sensitivity speaker, it is actually doubling your power twice. THAT's why it sounds so flipping loud.. And looking at the response curve, it's basically the same as the Celestion Alnico Blue - minor differences, and of course transient responses will be different, but I'm not surprised you thought it sounded like a ceramic Gold. Thanks for the report, and curses on you for the GAS!

+1 Jason
I bought my Tonker last year after hearing Dave Millsap raving about them with the Mazerati.
I was using a pre rola greenie and wanted to have an extra option of adding some extra db to that rig if I needed to play somewhere that required some extra grunt without having to lug my 2x12 Maz around. I found in the end that the Tonker had, if I could describe it in my words " a more refined sound" compared with the greenie. I do a couple of Pink Floyd numbers and the Tonker provides the perfect loud, punchy tone for that sort of thing.
I had my reservations about matching a 150 watt speaker with a 15 watt head but after all was said and done I really like this speaker with my Ghia. It doesn't even sound too bad with my Z28 as well! I have a Galaxie head coming soon and I'm just wondering what it will sound like with that? I just hope it's not going to be too loud as I haven't got a lot of money to go and get another speaker cab right now.
I think if your funds are low and you are limited to one amp getting yourself a Tonker loaded cab is an alternative to a higher powered amp.

Yea I've been hearing Dave and Curt talking about em for a while and I always wanted to try one... and I DON'T think the one I thought I played that time was really a Tonker cause it wasn't THAT loud... musta been another Eminence or it musta been broken! I've heard one, but I ain't played/ felt one until now. Oh and btw way... I really aired out the maz Jr next... holy smokes I had the master on 9:00 ( I usually have it from 1:00-maxed), vol between 2-3:00 and it was LOUD LOUD LOUD!!! whats wierd is it seemed a little louder than the RX JS... where as with everything else being equal the way I set it and play, usually they are not that different. hmmm... but the RX JS is really kind of a great match with a tonker cause it's not TO loud... just really, really loud. it only goes to eleven. Hey, groovergeorge is right on the money, if your Maz Jr ain't hanging, could easily use a Tonker for those situations instead of having to get a higher powered amp. and WOW, the Rt 66... can you say Jimi in a 1x12. I couldn't hear any thing but RRRRRRING afterwards, Until I tried it with the Maz SR... holy smokes... if Brother Dave has all them red amps of his loaded with Tonkers then CLEVELAND is NOT the ONLY loud town... The other is the town wherever DAVE happens to be playing at the moment!! I gotta get my ghia back from a friend I let borrow it to try it next... ;D Shall we be Bringing a variety of speakers to Z-fest... FUN! I bought me an Alnico Tone Tubby after borrowing a couple of Shannon's for a while... I need more cabs...

Hey boys,
Cuz o this thread and a couple of years of Bluzsteel raving about the tonker, I loaded one in a single 1x 12 last night. Just as a confirmation of the above posts, it sounds glorious with both my Maz and rx Jr's.
I have never gotten my Les Paul to sound like I wanted it to sound through my single 1 x 12. I always had low dB speakers in there combined with low wattage amps. Always too compressed or to much breakup for my tastes. The Tonker, however......even unbroken in....., just really opens things up with my les Paul. LAst night I was running my RXJR on about noon, bass mid aroun 9 and treble around 3.........volume halfway up on the guitar.
I was just getting these amazing "woody" tones........chunky and fat without and "flub"...
I don't know, I suck at tone adjectives. Basically I had one of those "found the tone in my head" experiences with this speaker. Thanks for this thread guys! It helped me find some cool cool tones!

I have a Tonker and I keep putting it in and taking it out of cabs. Maybe I haven't given it a fair shot yet but it seems to have this weird scooped out notch in this one midrange frequency that is really apparent at times.
It is indeed loud though - but it's one dB quieter than the Eminence Wizard, which I'm liking so far with my Maz Jr. I think. ;>) The Tonker has this reputation as being a very loud/efficient speaker, but maybe people don't know that the Wizard is even louder.

The Tonker is a fantastic speaker but I can see that some people aren't going to like it after they get it.
To my ears it is a very articulate sounding speaker. I can see how country and country-rock tele players would love it. Big British R&B styles and Pink Floyd type stuff sound fantastic with it. If you are playing big clean sections and tend to use effects to colour some of your sound then it's going to work. If however, you like the creamy woody tones of a greenback or the heavy midrange of a V30 then it ain't going to do it for you. It's a wonderful speaker and the only Eminence speaker really like and probably my favourite higher powered speaker on the market right now but I recommend anyone to try it out with there rig before they buy one.
I know this isn't the section to be asking this but has anyone tried a Tonker with the Ray' ?

Hi All, for me the question is, is the Tonker louder with a low wattage amp than a Red Fang (which is now starting to sound great after a couple of months blasting- a bit hard to break in)? I'm not worried about the tonal differences (because they'll be obvious) but the Red Fang (103db like the Tonker) isn't quite as loud as my 212 (100db WGS and 97db Greenback pair). I'm wondering if the Red Fang would be equal to the Tonker with a lower wattage amp, but not with a louder amp because of speaker cone break up and p0wer rating? Brett
