Thought I'd post a report on my experiences with the new RxJR + Attenuator. Even tho this thing is only (15? 22? ?? ) watts, it is still loud for it's size. (come on Doc- what IS the actual wattage of this thing?!?!)
The master volume, while excellent, I find to sort of tonally choke the amp in it's lower regions, like below 10:00, and this isn't a criticism of the circuit at all... master volumes simply do this. I find that the MV needs to be up to at least 10:00-10:30 for the amp to open up & really start getting the power tubes into the mix. With my normal volume at 7, this makes the amp way too loud for (my) home use. Enter the attenuator...
I have 2 Weber Mini-Masses, which have worked very well for me in the last couple of years, only suffering one complaint... ALL attenuators, the higher the level of attenuation is set, chokes the highs. No problem- I just turn up the treble/presence on the amp. It has worked GREAT for me at home, allowing me to get all the gooey power tube compression & drive at home levels.
The RxJR is no exception. If I were gigging I would be running the treble knob around 2 or 3, but attenuated it needs to be at max. Luckily, Z amps do not have a lack of treble!
With my volume at 7 (7 on the dial), and my MV at 11:00 (o'clock), using the Mini-Mass as my "2nd MV", this thing smokes. The attenuator allows me to get the power tube goodness at home levels. And when the Overdose is kicked in...woah. To me, this actually sounds very similar to the Brad Paisley RxES demos on the website- with the smooth compression, hair on the notes, & drive. (I am playing the JR thru a 1x12 Eminence Alnico Red Fang)
I know alot of people don't like attenuators, or don't like specific attenuators, I just wanted to comment on the subject since I've been playing my amp this way for the past week...
Bass 2 (dial)
Mid 6 (dial)
Treble 10 (dial)
Volume 7 (dial)
High input
Overdose ON and OFF (both sound great)
MV 11:00 (o'clock)
Mini-Mass: attenuated down to around 6.5 (about 1/3 of the way down from full volume)
oh- incidentally- I don't like the treble boosts on the Weber at all. Way too sterile & spikey for me. I tried using the 3db treble boost & turning the treble down on the JR, but it just didn't sound as good as cranking the JR's treble knob. Use as much of the EF86 as possible!
I am now in tonal heaven... ;D
