Ok so today my maz 38 invasion arrived via courior. I plugged in and right away noticed a vast difference in the tone I expected. Lots of hiss and crackle and a fair bit more gain than my Maz18jr. I checked the tube compliment and found some unexpected residents in the preamp. beside a few cheapo chinese 12ax7s there was a 12au7 in the last socket (beside pwr tubes, let say #5 socket). In #2 socket there was a 12at7. A 5v4 diode pack in place of the GZ34. I replaced all of them as I thought they should go (4x 12ax7 and 1x 12at7). Powered it up to an even larger wall if hiss. Needless to say I'm bummed. Any advice? Thx Bill

I found this on the Dr Z site. This is good.
MAZ-38 SR:. 1-GT12AX7S, 1-GT12AX7S, 1- GT12AT7C, 1-GT12AX7R1, 1-GT 12AT7 NOS, 1-Quad GT EL-84-S, 1- 5AR4
Except for I found a conflicting line up in the manual with a 12ax7 in socket 5
Is that maybe optional?

The preamp tube complement sounds fine, did you try a new set of output tubes? I'd also suggest a tube rectifier.
Welcome, by the way.

I bought a new quartet of GT el84s and a GT, gz34, and all is good. Everything is as it should be. I had a look inside the chassis last night as cleaned the pots and this amp is a work of art inside. thx Bill

Tubes are the issue about 90% of the time with used Z amps (if you have any issues at all). Everything else is built to last.
