Hi, I just bought a nice used Route 66 at my local GC and it sounded fantastic! Only thing was once in a while I'd notice a drop in volume so I thought maybe it was a bad cable.
Next thing I turned the amp on and left for about a half hour with it on standby and when I returned and flipped the switch I heard a loud hum and noticed through the grill cloth one of the tubes lighting up fairly bright. So I turnd the amp around and saw the one KT66 power tube on the left looking from the back was glowing bright orange, much brighter than the one next to it with blue going down the center of the tube as well. The guitar sound was heard very faintly but that's about all.
Could this just be a bad tube that I should replace the duet? Or should I have the amp checked out to see if something's wrong with it? Would you recommend a complete tube replacement for all the tubes as it's a 2003 model?

Replace the set of KT-66's with GOOD new matched set, JJ or Chinese are fine, I use GT KT-66-C from the factory. Also check the bias when replacing the KT-66's, 36 mA/tube.

Thanks Dr. Z! I just ordered a set of JJs from Eurotubes along with the new JJ EF806 ( 6267) which they say is a premium EF86 and JJ GZ34 + ECC83s & ECC803S Gold Pin (to try different preamps). Is that a good match up and can I just use their $25 bias tool to set one of the matched tubes to 36mA and I'm good to go, or do I need to do that other test with the red/white wire? If so, do you hold the red tester wire onto the red-white wire where it's soldered on or does it need to be de-soldered to test it?
Also, CONGRATS on the Brad Paisley cover of GuitarPlayer Magazine where he's surrounded by Dr. Z amps and in large quotes he says "An Amp is an instrument -- it's actually more important than the guitar". It's the ultimate Dr. Z Amps coverage I've discovered to date!
Thanks a lot!
