I have a 59 tweed Deluxe that needs a new speaker, looking for something that will retain the "tweed sound" but maybe give it a little more bottom and more volume if possible. I'm open for suggestions.

A Weber 12F125 (ceramic) in 25 watts should give you enough headroom while still retaining the sound your after. Go to, www.tedweber.com, he has a few different models all with different specifications to suit your particular desired needs/desires. IE: warm and crunchy, brighter with later breakup etc.

If you ever heard a Vox blue in the amp it is spectacular and there are some offerings from Weber that can even take it a notch above that. Hard to believe I know but it's true!

I used to gig a narrow panel tweed Deluxe a lot, I think it's '56 but that would be the same circuit as the '59. What you want is high efficiency if you want to gig it un-miced. I used a JBL D120 in mine for quite a while and it worked well but it was a little honky in the mids. I think a Celestion Blue type speaker would be real nice, as Myles says. It also wouldn't be too heavy. Those amps aren't constructed too ruggedly. I never tried mine with a Blue but I put a Celestion n-dym in it. It is louder than the JBL, smoother in the mids and also more bottom. That's the only amp that gets along with that speaker. Tonally a Blue would be better I'm sure.

I'm open for suggestions. I have a Victoria Tweed Deluxe loaded with a Weber 30 watt AlNiCo Blue Dog and it sounds absolutely amazing with my Fender Relic Strat. It sounds very close to the tones Billy Gibbons used to get on a few early ZZ Top tunes, i.e., juicy, sweet, and rich. Also very close to Eric Clapton's tone on the Layla album. One of my all time favorite tones. I use an HBE Germania to give it a little sizzle. Also have the requisite NOS tubes all the way across including an RCA 5V4G rectifier. You can't go wrong with this speaker in a Tweed Deluxe.

I played an outdoor gig last night and used my '56 Tremolux with a Celestion Century n-dym speaker in it. That thing was really loud! I was actually playing it a little too loud. A Tremolux is quite a bit of the same circuit as a Deluxe, just with fixed bias making it louder. I was plugged in the instrument channel, volume on about 4 of 12. I set the mic channel volume at about 11. This scoops out the mids and adds low end. I then had the tone on about 11. It was really a great zingy tweed sound. Then for the bluesier solos I stepped on the compressor for a volume boost. The amp got mushier then but still sounded great. I used a 5Y3, the chart calls for a 5U4GB but I wanted a little extra sag and it still doesn't sag much at all. I'd wager the Blue Dog would sound better but that Celestion sure makes that amp loud! I may put my Tone Tubby in it. I have a hunch that would sound great too. This was interesting. Yesterday when I was checking to be sure the Tremolux was operating okay before the gig I was going back and forth between it and my Stang Ray and Route 66. The Tremolux was hanging right with them, because of the high efficiency of that speaker. Now that was amazing!

I have a 56/57 narrow panel deluxe with a blue Celestion. The amp kills with that speaker. Almost too loud sometimes.
