...make a remote foot controller to control the preamp gain pot on my Maz 38 remotely?
I am sick of the endless search for distortion pedals when I really like the sound of the distortion on the amp best. The obvious problem is how to change to settings that quickly in a live situation. In an ideal world I would have two amps, one for clean, one for dirty, but I am not swimming in cash right now.
I was thinking that it would possible to get the same pot used for the preamp gain, and put it into volume pedal, and route the signal to the remote pot when engaged. When the pedal is not plugged in the signal would flow as normal. The real question is, if send that signal through 15 feet of extra wire, is it going affect the tone and will I be potentially introducing a world of hum and buzz into the signal if the chord used in not properly grounded.
I know Neil Young has an elaborate mechanical system made for his Fender Deluxe that does this exact thing, but I thought my solution might a little easier than building a 'whizzer'.
And no... I already tried turning down the volume on my guitar, it just isn't exactly the same.
Is this possible or a bad idea?

It's possible, but in my opinion, a bad idea. I'd say get used to the volume on the guitar.
Try a clean boost...not a distortion pedal. From what I know, that should be like turning up the amp volume.
There are people here who use them and perhaps someone can offer some suggestions. A clean boost should do the trick.

You need a Magic Dingus Box. Danny Gatton made it to remotely change his amp settings. But a clean boost is easier.

The RC booster is a good clean boost pedal. Transparent or you can use the EQ knobs.

Electro Harmonix used to make a pedal (i forget the name right now) that was a rocker foot pedal that ran a wire to the pot shaft and just manually turned it for you while you moved the pedal.
It's a great idea because it gives you full control without going into your signal chain. No install other than removing one knob.

My only beef with the boosting route is that the overall volume of the amp tends to jump significantly.
I tried many combinations of amp settings and boosts before I decided to generally set the amp clean(ish) & apply my MI Audio Crunch Box when necessary.
But hey, I'm always willing to try something new!

I'd be jazzed to know the name of this doohickey.

EH Hotfoot -super expensive if you can find one.($300-$500) New version Tone in progress 3rd hand. Neither of witch would have long enough cables to reach an amp.
