Sometimes when I fire up my Ghia the 1st EL84 after V2 makes a slight pop and then lights up about twice as hot as the other 84. I have a set of NOS Teslas in there now but it did the exact same thing with original GT's. To make things even weirder I swapped every other tube (V1,V2, rectifier) at least once with good new tubes to see if they were causing it and I still get the same results. When I turn it off and then back on a second time a few minutes later it doesn't pop and glow like before. Anybody got any ideas? Maybe my power is sh*@#ty... I dunno.. Anyway, somebody shed some light if they can..
Gracias!
Johnny

Could be a bad filament in the EL-84. Try swapping positions and see if it follows the move. A filament will lower it's resistance when warm, that's why it only happens when cold.
Does the amp work OK after the initial surge ?
It could be a weak Conjuctive Filter. Is the amp NEW ? What is the serial number? Were did you buy it?

Thanks Doc, I'll give that a try.
The amp works great after the initial surge. I bought the amp new from Willcutts last year.
I'll report back with my findings. Maybe once it warms up a bit in my basement it might help too.. it's been darn near 60 degrees down there..
Thanks Doc!

Looks like it turned out to be the one of the Teslas. I switched spots from 1 to 2 and the problem followed over to the same tube. I put the original GT's back in and no problem for a week now. Thanks for the info Doc!
