HI,
I was interested in a DR z but I am not sure which one I would like. I really want a 3D clean tone, I dont need much break up, I just want that beautiful lush 3d tone. Ala Eric Johnson, David Gilmore..
Thanks Jason

I don't have one, but I believe you described the Stangray.

Second on that Stangray. Do you live close to a dealer? If you're around south Alabama I'll let you try mine (but it's not for sale).

Depending on how loud you need it to be, a Maz Jr could also do the trick.
While both Johnson and Gilmore have clean sounds, the both are known for over the top distortion.

Gilmour used big 100 watt Hi-Watts in the Floyd days and Eric Johnson a Marshall 100 watt SLP.Both are EL34 based amps that produced cut glass cleans at very high volumes with a hint of grit coming in as peoples drinks on the tables of the bars you are playing at start to rattle. The Docs closest amp to these is the KT45. It's an absolute beast! Go check out Dave Grissom's sound clips for a perfect example of what the KT45 is capable of in the right hands. Good luck, hope you find the right choice.

Thanks Jason What's confusing is that this part,"a 3D clean tone, I dont need much break up, I just want that beautiful lush 3d tone" describes the Stang Ray, but this part,"Ala Eric Johnson, David Gilmore.." throws it to the KT45. I'd get the Stang. I own one and this amp can make anything sound phenomenal, and I truly think it's one of those do-it-all amps! jmo

What kind of wattage are you looking for? I guess I mean - Is it for live gigs, or recording?

Which amp is best with humbuckers? Depends what you're trying to do.

I think any of Zs big amps can do it. I would suggest the RXES and the Stang Ray first but really a Maz 38 could handle it too.

Yup, a Maz 38 is the most versatile out of all mentioned so far. Master volume, tmb, optional loop and reverb. Sounds great with open or closed back cabs and is plenty loud. But, I'd play a KT45 if you can get your hands on one and a Stingray. They are all great amps and do some of the things that you described.

If you want EJ clean tones, he uses old Fender Twins. I'm not sure which Z will get you closest to that. Personally, I'd go with a different builder if you mainly want to nail that classic Fender spank.
That said, doesn't Z's new Galaxie offer Fender-ish clean tones and vintage British style gain tones all in one package? That may be something to consider.
