the other day, after spending a great couple of hours with my RX after speaker swapping (more on that in the RX section) i hit the standby switch and was greated by a nasty shorting/buzz as the power drained. no problems ever before I repeated the operation a couple of times and found it to be consistant. otherwise the amp sounds great. any ideas?

Try a rectifier swap. A NOS 5AR4/GZ-34 would be nice. If to pricey try a new JJ 5AR4.
