Myles,
As you can see in my signature I have a RxES head and a Stang Ray head. I have been a Z owner since summer '06. Last week the Rx head was blowing 1/2 amp fuses and I found the Recto tube solution on the Z forum. It fixed the problem.
Last night on the gig the Stang Ray head was blowing 3 amp fuses. There's a more detailed picture of the experience on the Stang Ray site, but I digress. The 3 amp fuses killed the power entirely vs the 1/2 amp problem which left the pilot light on but stopped output. A knowledgable friend suggested replacing the Recto tube for this problem as well. I put in a solid state rectifier and it's running fine...for now.
Recto tubes apparently have multiple functions which could cause both types of problems. Remember these are two different heads. I'm going through Rectifier tubes like candy. I can switch to the solid state Recto permanently because reliability is the bottom line but tube tone, sag etc. is why I bought a Dr Z amp.
What other type of underlying problem would cause such consistent Recto tube failure?

i blew a recto tube because of the way i was using the effects loop.ran a choral/flange thru my pedalpad effects loop then into maz 18 effects loop.started loosing power, then amp went dead.replaced tube & it started doing the same thing again.fortunatley i decided to unplug from the effects loop & amp started working fine, before i lost another tube.

Bill, The Sovtecs will just go..I swapped one from one Z to another and instantly it started popping the 3 amp fuse, replaced the rec and all is fine. I suggest two things. 1. pop for a nice NOS rec 2. keep a SS plug in your gig bag along with the correct fuses, more than one of each.

I was blowing fuses in my Mazerati, and it turned out to be the recto tube also. BUT, in my case, the tube wasn't bad. I took the amp apart to change out the grillecloth on the valance, and when I put it back together, and replaced the tubes, I put the recto back in incorrectly. I thought that it could only go into the socket one way, because of the keyway. Was I wrong! Be careful with this guys! When I put the tube back in correctly, everything was fine. I've been using it now a couple of months with no problems at all. I thought that darn keyway on the tube was foolproof!
