OK, so I have 2 amps here. Both Peavey Classic series. 1 is a 50 watt (Classic 50), 1 is a 15 watt cathode-biased (Classic 20). They are not exactly the same circuit, but being from the same series they sound VERY close to one another. With the C20 plugged into the C50 cab, I can get almost identical sounds... almost...
Which brings me to my question: I assume the 50 watter has larger transformers, and I was wondering what that actually MEANS to the tone? Everybody talks about "bigger iron"- especially in Z amps- even the lower-powered ones- and how it makes such a difference. I'm definitely feeling/hearing a difference here, but before I jump to any conclusions I was wondering "just what does 'bigger iron' mean to tone?

It just puts your balls out there a bit more. Just kidding, I don't really know, but my Mazerati has a transformer 3X the size of the Ghia.

So, VOLUME aside, the Mazerati has "3x the balls" of the Ghia (at the same volume)

The ghia transformer is BIG for an 18 watter, at least double the size I see in most 18 watt amps. Here's a couple of pictures from Miles' site www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/doctorzamps3.html
