I need some help choosing the right amp I live where there are no Z dealers, I did own a Maz18 Jr reverb a couple of years back. The only thing I didn't care for was it was a tad ice picky with my strat and tele, and outdoors it was not quite enough not mic'd. I play mostly classic rock, blues and some country. I see all of these amps need to be tamed on small venues which isn't a problem. I am looking for head and cabinet this time and this would be my main amp for the time being. Thanks and help Cody....

Classic rock, blues and some country? And a Maz Jr was not loud enough?
Hands down, I'd pick the Route 66!! No Ice pick treble problems with it.
There are two Route 66's on Ebay at the moment....along with two Z Best cabinets, I think even a 1x12 Z cabinet.
Good luck

How about an RxEs and Z best cab, that should cover all your needs.

All 3 will easily do rock, blues and country...I know because I owned all three. ;D They are all gone now, but if given the choice of owning only one again (I also play rock, blues, and country), TOUGH CHOICE DISCLAIMER: I'd go with the RxES. Lots of clean headroom (45w), overdose switch for gain. Go with a darker voiced speaker though, because the ES is a bright amp. Plug into the low gain input, turn on the overdose, and work your guitar volume...sweetness!
Best buy pick has to go to the Rt 66...a lot of amp for $950+- bucks (used). Stick an RC Booster in front and the 66 will scream...great sustain & harmonic overtones.

When you say the RxES is "bright"... brighter than what?? Brighter than most other Z amps? I'm considering an RxES, with a silver+blue cab. Is the brightness (which I'm now worried is OVER-bright) easily controlled with the treble knob?
On a side note, I hate talking all these "mystical" terms with regards to tone, but I've never even SEEN an RxES in person, let alone PLAY one. I wish there were more Z dealers.

The RxES is the brightest of any of the 7 Z's I've owned. The treble knob lived at 8:00, and the bass around 2:00. Thing is with the ES, IF you can get the volume up with the overdose on, it will fatten up and get spongier...which I was usually able to do, by using a less efficient darker voiced speaker, and by just being your louder than average guitar player...I base that on hearing other bands as a benchmark. I have no doubt I'd still own the ES if the Stingray hadn't come along. I wasn't even looking...the 'Ray kind of fell in my lap! So yes, brightness can be controlled to a degree, but if an amp is considered bright, it's simply gonna be bright. Have you ever played a DRRI? Now that's a bright amp, an ear ringer.

First, I too have owned the majority of the Z amps, I LOVE the RXES, I do not consider mine brite....it has lots of highs AND lots of lows, sounds awesome with any speaker but flat wails through two Greenbacks, I find the bass harder to tame than the highs, It is NOT Ice pick, this could be the most musical amp I have owned..and yes, I had a 'ray I think the RXES with an Airbrake on 1 click is an amazing amp.

Cody, If the amp was too sharp with a Tele or Strat it could have been fixed in about 20 seconds with a few tube changes.

;D Thank you guys for all of your feed back, but I think I am narrowing this down to either a Prescription ES, or possibly a Stang Ray. After listening to dozens of sound bits I think these two or closer to what I want. I don't understand why there isn't as much hype for the ES as there is the Ray. I also look at the resale down the road just in case this isn't the amp I want. The ES seems more versatile. More feedback would greatly be appreciated. Myles I also didn't have enough volume on a of couple of un-mic'd gigs with my Maz 18, other than that a great amp. That's what's brought me back, the Great Z TONE!!!

Myles, If I may take this thread in a slightly different direction, I have a similar situation with one particular Tele I like to use from time to time, but it is noticeably sharper/icepicky through my Mazerati. What Mazerati tube changes would you suggest to sharpen that attack a bit?
