Hi, just wondering what is the plate voltage in Route 66. If the plate voltage in Route 66 is higher then 450V, does that mean that I can (should) only run GT KT66HP in that amp, since they can take up to 550V? Has the Route 66 been designed "around" the KT66HP in order to utilize the higher plate voltages? Am I over-thinking the whole thing? The KT66HP are not listed on GT site anymore, are they still making them? Thanks!

Mine runs 450 plate volts, GT does not produce the HP's any longer.

Great, thanks!
I tried to Google it but some places say KT66 are rated up to 450V and some say up to 500V ... guess it depends on the manufacturer. The only 550V ones I found were the HP's. What got me thinking was Mr. Pittman saying in his Tube Amp book that Route 66 was designed around the HP's.

The Route 66 was developed around the KT-66HP originally.
The current KT66C can now handle higher plate voltages in the past if they are the Shuguang produced GT tube that they do for GT due to a mod in the base with a sleeve over one of the wires that run to the base where they used to arc at above 450 or so.
These work great now but I would not go above 480 or so with them in any case.

Cool Myles, thanks!
I have a pair of those KT66C and also have a pair of Tung-Sol KT66 on the way from Tubedepot. As soon as I check them out I'll post a review. Hopefully they can handle 450V with no issues, I think they are rated for 450V max, not sure though. I've just recently started messing with tubes, usually I trust a tech to put in whatever he thinks is the best but I'm feeling a bit more "experimental" these days.
Also, I put in a JJ GZ34S recto instead of the Sovtek 5AR4 that RT66 came with and I think I like it more ... more headroom it seems.
