Hello Everyone,
I am new to this board and had a question regarding the several amps Dr. Z produces.
I walked into my local dealer and tried a Maz 18 and was completely blown away by the sound. I also tried the KT88 and found it great as well. Seeing that there are a handful of amps in their line, which one do you guys reccomend I go with?
I after a raw Angus Young/Joe Perry/Billy Gibbons tone but cannot get a plexi because it is just too damn loud. I tried a matchless dc-30, but with a $4,000 price tag, it's real high for me.
Do you guys think a $4,000 matchless is that much better than the Maz 38 or some of the Dr. Z amps which are a lot less costly?
Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Chris

If you're after a raw Angus/Perry/Gibbons tone you may want to look into an SRZ-65 or a 6545. They both have master volumes that are very effective & both of those amps can be found for around $1200-$1500 on the used market. If your gigs/rehersals allow you to "open it up" a bit the Rt.66 would be my first choice. The Rt.66 takes pedals better than any amp I've ever used so it might be best to go with a 66 & then season to taste with some pedals.

I've always been a fan of the nonmaster volume Marshall sound. I feel the Max 38 can get their easily plus the great master volume on these lets you control the volume. The master on a Maz works much better than any Marshall.

Thanks so much.... I'm going to gove them a shot when they come into the store..
Have any of you guys used the klon centaur? I heard about it about 6 years ago seeing that Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were both using it for touring and read great reviews. I read that it's only a boost and not an overdrive pedal, how is that different from the tubescreamer I tried in the store out of the Maz 38?
Is this pedal worth the $500 ish price tag? The store didn't have them, but told me to come back when the fulltone came in....
Thanks again for your feedback on this post, it is sincerely appreciated.....

I bought a Klon six or seven years ago and kept it less than a year, back when new price was $225. You are correct; it is a boost. The builder did kindly explain to me that it was going to sound best when my SR was already cranked a bit and frankly, while it did provide more fidelity and clarity and a boost, it also yielded a nasally, mid-range hump and it really only did its thing when the amp was at 5 or 6, which is loud for a BFSR to begin with. Others may differ. The first time I took the back off to change batteries, I discovered that one of the wires to the jacks was merely looped around and not soldered. My only regret is that I didn't keep it so I could sell now at an inflated price. I now have a Toadworks Meat that costs $120 shipped, allows you to blend "fat" and "clean" and does the same thing: makes the amp sound louder, clearer, bolder, and more saturated, depending. But no mid hump. The tubescreamer is an overdrive--it will make the amp sound louder, less clear, bolder, and more distorted, depending on how much sauce you feed the amp. Good luck with your quest. In the end, I suggest that you play a Klon or at least hear one in person. To answer you question, is it worth $500? Answer: if you want it. There are other less expensive pedals that do the same thing.
No offense meant to current Klon users. My personal experience only.

Very interesting about the Klon, so does the toadworks colour your sound? Or does it just boost the exact sound your amp is giving you?
I liked the tubescreamer but found tht it muddied up my sound and changed it too much with too much gain. I really liked the Maz's sound and just want it to sound like it's pushing even harder....
How about the fulltone? does it color your sound or give a nice clean boost?

I have a Klon & it has it's own vibe for sure. I go through phases with it though. Sometimes I use it & sometimes I dont. You can get it brand new from the mfg for $329 before shipping.

The Toad colors the sound very little--depends on how much "Fat" you roll on. Overall, though, I have to say that it's quite transparent. I like what it does to Jr. Go to their site for samples: www.virtualtoad.com/mt/index.htmlI don't have any experience with Fulltone but there are many fans out there....

I have a Klon too, and I really like it; I gig with it a lot. It does have a very slight midrange emphasis, but still has much less tone coloration than most boost pedals.
This may sound trite, but one of the things I love about it is that the knobs are large enough that I can adjust the settings on the fly - using my foot.
If you're looking for good, clear boost pedals, I can recommend several others that I own, use, and like:
Fulltone FatBoost
Xotic BB Preamp
Those are both topnotch pedals.

Kane, would you be able to replace the Klon with the BB and still be happy?
